Wild and Flowery April

April is wildflower month in Texas, and our state flower is the bluebonnet. It's but one of many wildflowers that fill pastures and roadsides throughout the state during the spring months. Sometimes, people like me grow bluebonnets in pots. I have three pots of them on our patio that recently started blooming. Here's one of them.

Some of the most prevalent other wildflowers you'll see while driving through our not-tiny state:

Indian Blankets | Indian Paintbrushes  | Mexican Hats | Wine Cups |

Pink Evening Primroses that we call buttercups because of their yellow centers.

And to continue with the Wild and Flowery theme, April is also host to some amazing festivals in our great state, too. Last year, they were non-existent. I'm not sure about this year. I'd say iffy. However, I'm hopeful for 2022. Three that I know are fun:

Bluebonnet Festival in Chappell Hill, which is northwest of Houston toward Austin.

Strawberry Festival in Poteet, which is south of San Antonio.

And of course Fiesta San Antonio, which is huge. And awesome, too.

Moving outside of Texas, and outside of the U.S., here are three famous people who were born in April:

Leonardo da Vinci - 1452 | William Shakespeare - 1564 | Queen Elizabeth II - 1926

Until next month--enjoy April, wherever you are!

I hope you get some of those festivals this year.

Hi Carol,
We call these lupins - but I much prefer the name 'bluebonnet'. Glad to hear that Spring has sprung after that dire Texan winter. Stay safe and well.

Things are blooming here, too! It's 80 degrees here today...ack.

Pretty!
Our crocuses are just popping out and the tulips and daffodils shouldn't be too far behind. Our snow melted early this year so it should be soon!

These festivals sound nice, especially the strawberry festival :)

Those festivals sound fun. With Texas reopening, I'd be surprised if you don't have them.

What a colorful, beautiful season!
I would very, very happily go to any (or all) of those festivals. I do hope they can happen this year.
All these years later I still celebrate Leonardo - and mourn his departure.
Lots of flowers in bloom here, too, and the pollen's as high as an elephant's eye. I've already done more gardening this year than I have in the past 20. Feels kinda good.

Whenever I see pictures of Bluebonnets, I am envious!

Alex - The only one I know about is Fiesta San Antonio. It's tentatively postponed until mid-June, but it may be pushed out further or cancelled. Depends on covid.

Manic Scribbler - Our bluebonnets are a form of lupine called Lupinus texensis. They have shorter stalks than other lupines I have seen.

Elizabeth - It's 81 here today, but supposed to be 90-ish tomorrow and Friday.

Jemi - I love those spring bulbs, but I don't know how to get them to bloom here. That said, my indoor poinsettia is still in bloom :)

Rachna - They are fun. Tons of food and music and things to buy. Sometimes way too many people, though. So many it's hard to move about freely.

Natalie - It takes a long time to plan for them and for vendors to sign up. So I don't really know.

HR - Yes! I love spring :)

EC - I believe you and I must be distant cousins of some kind.

Susan - I hope our pollen is mostly done. Oak was bad. Most of the pines are east of us.

Liza - Just remember how hot it gets here in the summer and the envy will vanish, LOL. I would love to spend summers in Boston. Or maybe even Maine. But not winter.

Three of my flowers have bloomed, but we just had our last frost so I will be planting more.

Your state is wide open with no vaccine passport - you will be fully open very, very soon. (Oh, how I envy that!)
Oh, a Strawberry Festival sounds like my kinda festival :)

You're a wildflower connoiseur! Back in Ohio I cultivated a prairie garden so I recognize the Indian Paintbrushes and a few others. Love, love, LOve the Bluebonnets. When I visit my daughter in San Antonio in the spring (which I'll be doing soon) she always takes me to where there're acres of them.

Diane - Glad you have some blooms! I'm thankful for the vaccine. We got Pfizer and have passed the two-week immunity period. Still mask up when going out, though. It's nice to get out!

Jo-Anne - I love spring and flowers.

Lynda - The Strawberry Festival is one of the wilder ones :)

Leigh - Enjoy!

I love bluebonnets. When I was in Texas for a book event one year, they gave us bluebonnet seeds. I planted them in my garden, but they didn't like California soil.

Lee - Oh, what a bummer! They're so pretty :)

April has such beautiful blooms. I love bluebonnets. I may have to give them a try here in Alabama.
Carol Kilgore said…
Mason - Give them a try! The worst that can happen is they don't come up or they come up and don't bloom.

Your bluebonnets are beautiful. I'd like to try adding some to my garden.

Love,
Janie

Janie - Your climate is somewhat similar, so they might grow. Give them a try!
