March to the Beat of a Different Drummer
"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."
From Walden, by Henry David Thoreau
So maybe in a sense, we're all poets at heart.
Or not. Perhaps we're warriors. Or maybe even saints.
I chose the title because it has the word March in it. Then I looked it up to see where it came from. It surprised me, so maybe it surprised you, too.
Keeping with my goal of sticking with the KISS Principle this year, I'm going to just chat about a couple of other March-related things.
March was named for the Roman god of war, Mars. And Shakespeare wrote about Beware the Ides of March in his play, Julius Caesar. The Ides are the middle of the month, in particular March 15, the day the real-life Julius Caesar was stabbed to death in Rome, pretty much in keeping with the whole god-of-war thing.
Two days later on the calendar, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Patrick, who was the man who brought Christianity to Ireland and used an Irish clover to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.
Not a saint or warrior?
Since 1982, March has been the National Women's History Month, celebrating the accomplishments of women to our country and to the world.
Last, but far from least, is the Vernal Equinox - the first day of spring. This year, the equinox will be on Saturday, March 20. Of course if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you will experience the Autumnal Equinox on this date.
So there it is - everything you need to know about March. Now you can quiz your kids and show them how smart or nerdy you are :)
I'll be back here on Wednesday, April 7. Happy Spring!
Hugs,
Carol
