March to the Beat of a Different Drummer

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

From Walden, by Henry David Thoreau

So maybe in a sense, we're all poets at heart.

Or not. Perhaps we're warriors. Or maybe even saints.

I chose the title because it has the word March in it. Then I looked it up to see where it came from. It surprised me, so maybe it surprised you, too.

Keeping with my goal of sticking with the KISS Principle this year, I'm going to just chat about a couple of other March-related things.

March was named for the Roman god of war, Mars. And Shakespeare wrote about Beware the Ides of March in his play, Julius Caesar. The Ides are the middle of the month, in particular March 15, the day the real-life Julius Caesar was stabbed to death in Rome, pretty much in keeping with the whole god-of-war thing.

Two days later on the calendar, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Patrick, who was the man who brought Christianity to Ireland and used an Irish clover to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

Not a saint or warrior?

Since 1982, March has been the National Women's History Month, celebrating the accomplishments of women to our country and to the world.

Last, but far from least, is the Vernal Equinox - the first day of spring. This year, the equinox will be on Saturday, March 20. Of course if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you will experience the Autumnal Equinox on this date.

So there it is - everything you need to know about March. Now you can quiz your kids and show them how smart or nerdy you are :)

I'll be back here on Wednesday, April 7. Happy Spring!

Hugs,

Carol

So looking forward to March 20, although here, we really wait until late April to feel sure spring is here. Curious that the clover is the sign of the trinity, but a four-leaf clover is good luck?
A clover as the trinity - clever Patrick!
Wonder what Patrick made of the rare 4-leaf clover!?

Thanks for the overview of the month...I learned some new things!

I'm hoping (as you probably are too) that March marches itself into Texas and and brings us green buds on all our beleaguered plants and trees.

Hi Carol, love this quote ""If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." Thanks. I'll be using it in one of my articles :)

Happy Spring! Ours won't come for four to six weeks. I love that March is women's history month.
Enjoy your Spring - as I revel in our Autumn. And happy reading and writing to you - in every season.

Looking forward to Spring! Our March came in like a lion with nasty, windy, sleet so we're hoping it goes out like a lamb and gives us warm sunny Spring!

I have a friend who is Irish, was born on St. Patrick's Day, and then got married that same day. She loves March!

Liza: I think it's because the four-leaf clover is a mutation and rare, but I didn't research this. My thoughts only.

Alex: Maybe inspired :)

Elizabeth: Cool! Don't know about Patrick, but now I wonder if he ever saw a four-leaf one.

Bish - YES! We have 80s in our current forecast for next week.

Rachna - You're welcome. I'm happy you can use and share it!

Natalie - I'm hoping ours is right around the bend, but you never know about Texas weather. I like Women's History Month, too :)

EC - I know you will enjoy autumn as much as I will enjoy spring.

Jemi - I hope it goes out like a lamb for you, too.

Diane - I can see why your friend loves March!

March is packed with events to note, not the least of which is the heralding of spring. Thanks for the history.

Interesting facts about March. I also saw on the Penguin Audio site March is National Crafting Month. I am so looking forward to Spring.
I don't march I stumble through life.
I do like that quote. I too hadn't realised that was where the phrase came from.

Lee - My pleasure :)

Mason - I love trying crafts. My execution rarely matches what I see in my head, LOL. Except for cooking. I'm pretty good at that :)

Jo-Anne - I do plenty of stumbling about, too :)

Lynda - Glad I'm not the only one :)

So good to hear from you! Your part of the world was in a bit of a sticky wicket recently.

Happy March!
