Research - Truth or Lie

This week I'm over at Clarissa Draper's blog talking about some of the reasons I had so much fun writing Secrets of Honor. And no, I'm not telling you here :)

I'd planned to share some views of Corpus Christi, the setting for the novel, but I'm unable to find that memory card. Sigh.

So ... I decided instead to share a few of the things I researched while writing the story.

Theatrical Makeup
The Art of Sculpture
Memory
The Department of Homeland Security
How to Disguise a Bomb
Ankle Holsters
9mm Semi-Automatics
European Capitals
Stage Scaffolding
Diamond Rings

Which of these things is not like the other?

I'm going to steal use Crystal Collier's method of truth or lie. If you're can guess the one topic above that I researched but ended up not using in the story, I'll put your name in a drawing for a $5 Amazon Gift Card.

I'll announce the winner here next Monday!

Speaking of winners and Amazon Gift Cards ... you can enter the contest on my website and be eligible to win a $10 Amazon Gift Card. So go on over there and answer the question. That's all there is to it.

Also...below is a signup for the release of Secrets of Honor. I have mixed feelings about posting this because I know how fed up all of us are with this kind of thing. However, since I haven't yet thought of a better way, I'm falling back on what I know.

I'm trying to think of a foolproof way to split up the first chapter into excerpt pieces for each participant, but I haven't had any luck with that so far. I'm open to ideas, so please share in the comments.

The release date is Monday, September 15. You can post the information anytime from September 15 onward. I'm not picky about that at all. And I thank you very much for participating.

My request is that you make this release thing just a part of your regular post. If you want it to be your total post for the day, that's fine, but totally unnecessary. I'll send you the blurb, links, and other things as soon as I have good buy links.

See you at Clarissa's!

You know I'll help!
My only advice on the excerpts is keep them short. Maybe take it all from the same passage so that people have to check out all the others who are posting for the full thing.
And my guess - European Capitals.

I don't know if I signed up already. I can post a promo.

I'm also guessing European Capitals.

My guess would be stage scaffolding.

I was going to say European capitals, too.

Looking forward to your release. I'm going to be totally different and say diamond ring. Enjoyed your post at Clarissa's.

I added my name, but I've already got you down for the 18th. And like Karen said, how else are we going to let everyone know what's coming out next?

My guess is European capitals.
I would be honored to spread the word on Secrets of Honor. Send me the info.

My memory is going, but I've already got you scheduled for the 15th :) Signed up again!

I can help spread the word.

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure that research list caught the NSA's attention!

My guess is "Diamonds."

My first instinct was European Capitals. So, I guess I will stick with that.

An idea for your release day... Did you participate in Lexa Cain's release for her most recent novel? That was the one with the cover of her book and something "different" on each site.

What is you took the first few sentence or two and broke it up on the first 10 entrants' blogs? It would be like a word jumble. People could email their answers and everyone who had them in the correct order would be in the drawing to win a free e-book.

You could use all participants but it might be a) too hard and b) too many.

You could give another prize for the person who comes up with the most creative (and wrong) answer if you wanted. Heck, it's your release... you can do whatever you want!!!

I can't guess. I will have to live without the Amazon gift card. I hope your research doesn't make you a topic of research for NSA.

Love,
Janie

Alex - Thanks for the help and suggestion.

Medeia - Thank you, too :)

Delores and Marcy - Thanks for playing - good luck!

Mason - Glad you liked my post at Clarissa's.

Karen - Thanks for signing up.

Bish - See you on the 18th!

Teresa - Cool - will do!

I know your research is thorough. So, if you have misplaced your memory card, I am going to opt for Memory as the thing you didn't include. Or the European capitals thing.

I'm going for memory. Congrats on your new release!
Carol Kilgore said…
Jemi - The 17th, as we just talked about :)

Diane - Great! Thanks :)

Jay - I may have been on their radar earlier LOL.

Robin - Great suggestions! Thanks!!

Janie - You never know. I've researched a lot of interesting topics :)

EC and Liza - Thanks for playing. Good luck!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope the post was okay for you. Let me know if you would like to post again in the future.

Of course I'd be delighted to help!

My guess for the list: diamond rings. Don't ask me why. Of course you realize that a research list like that means the NSA is now watching you...

Wow that's what I get for having too many windows open at once! I read yours and Tara's post back to back and got the names mixed up. Sorry Carol! Anywho, I can't believe your release date is barely over a month away! An autumn release :)
Carol Kilgore said…
Lynda - Great! Thank you.

Clarissa - I'm loving blogging with you. Thanks for hosting me. I definitely will :)

Helena - Cool! Not about THEM watching, but about helping :)

OE - No worries :) I know - it's getting close now. Means I gotta hustle!

Researching for writing takes up a lot of my time - hours - and I've researched so many guns and reloading that Homeland Security probably has me on some watch list. I think your lie is "How to Disguise a Bomb." Or else you might be on that watchlist with me. :O
I'll sign up, and my guess is Memory. What was the question again?!

Julie
Carol Kilgore said…
Lexa - There's always that chance LOL!

Julie - There was a question?
Crystal Collier said…
Well, all you had to do was ask. I'm not stingy with my meme. ;)

Honestly, I host the truth or lie game because I stink at it. Truly. BUT, if we're merely looking for things that don't fit...Memory?

I'd love to come help with your hop, but I'm going to be hosting family in my BRAND NEW house on the 15th, plus it's my son's birthday. I'll tweet it though. =)
Carol Kilgore said…
Crystal - Have a grand time in your brand new house :)

I'm going to scaffolding as the one you didn't end up using.

I can help out, but I would post it on my FB page (which no one sees *sobs*) and link it to my weekly blog post with the cover.
Carol Kilgore said…
Stina - I totally hear you loud and clear about the FB page. Same with mine.
Cherie Reich said…
I'm guessing European capitals. And what a neat twist to Crystal's fun "Truths or lie."
Rula Sinara said…
Okay, this is fun, Carol. I'm going with Ankle holsters, just because I think it's a trick LOL. My guess is you know about them from researching past books, so you didn't research them for his one. :)
I'll guess diamond rings.

(I'm already onboard with the promotion thingie, right?) (I'm obviously also an idiot... HA!)

Happy weekend!
Carol Kilgore said…
Cherie - Thanks!

Rula - Good luck!

Susan - Yep, you're onboard!
Tara Tyler said…
my guess 9MM gun
what a fun (and very difficult) contest!
i'd like to know more about all those things =)

heading over to clarissa's - yay for carol!

I think just because we're all a bit tired of promo is no reason to stop all together. Having a cover and infer and buy links for an author is a good thing for everybody. I'm in!
Carol Kilgore said…
Tara - I learn a lot doing research!

Lee - Yay! Thank you :)

Hope none of your searches landed you on Homeland Security's watchlist -- and good luck on the promo.
Carol Kilgore said…
Milo - If they did, it's probably nothing new :)
Slamdunk said…
Wow, I hope the feds don't execute a warrant to learn about your Internet searches or they will bring you in and you'll have lots of explaining to do. Haha.

On the way over to Clarissa's place now.
Carol Kilgore said…
Slamdunk - I'll have you all called as character witnesses :)
Melissa said…
I'll add an announcement to the Sept. 12th Promo Friday. :)
Shelly said…
I think I'm signed up, but if not, please put me down for any date. And, um, memory?
Carol Kilgore said…
Melissa - Cool.

Shelly - I have you on my calendar to guest blog with you on Monday, September 29. Looking forward to it.
