A-Z Solomon's Compass Style: Taylor Campbell

Welcome A-Z bloggers!
And everyone else, of course :)
My A-Z posts are all about my new book, SOLOMON'S COMPASS.
Read the A post to learn who AJ is.

Hi, Everyone! My name's Taylor.

Yes, that Taylor...Taylor Campbell from Solomon's Compass.

I've been in the Coast Guard for 17 years and am a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. As of today I'm a full commander, but in a couple of months, I'll be a captain.

I always knew I'd be a four-striper one day. My mother still thinks I'm wasting my time - that I could and should have found Mr. Corporation and have a huge house, a country club membership, and a closet filled with designer clothing. My mother has been out of touch for as long as I can remember.

Now Uncle Randy...he would be proud of my accomplishments. I wish he was still around. Some days I think his spirit still is because I can feel his presence.

So besides the Coast Guard, my life was pretty uneventful until SOLOMON'S COMPASS came along. And Jake Solomon. Not much has been the same since.

Carol asked me to tell you three things I like, and one that I don't. I like smoked brisket, the ocean, and Snow White. I don't like being told not to do something. I don't like that at all.

So I guess that's it.

Hope to meet a lot of you here today.

Tell her not to do it and I bet she does it!

My life went through a stage when my family roles went into reverse. Them telling me what to do not me advising them. Why this happens I don;t know. Great post,

Yvonne.

Ah, smoked brisket. When we go to Texas, we always stop at a BBQ place for delicious brisket.
Congrats Taylor on the four stripes coming.

Me too, don't tell me I can't do something.

Mmmm...brisket. TG marinates brisket in some sort of magical Coca-Cola/apple cider vinegar/olive oil mixture before he smokes it all day. Yum!

I've never had smoked brisket but it sounds really yummy. I want to try it now.

Great to learn more about Taylor!

Alex, you pretty much have me on that one!

I hope you have things back in the proper order now, Yvonne.

Clarissa, my mouth is watering already thinking about how melt-in-your-mouth good it is :)

Thank you, Teresa. We must be a lot alike.

I'm collecting recipes, Linda G. One I've heard from a few is an overnight marinade of Montreal Steak Seasoning and Italian salad dressing. And a slow fire.

Omigosh, Julie. You've missed out on something so yummy it's beyond description. Great to meet you, too!

Taylor,

I like your no nonsense style. You know what you want and that's a good thing.
I love a man in uniform. Coast guard is no exception.

Oh, I think I like her. I love that she likes Snow White. (Kinda goes with the uniform.) I wonder how many female captains there are in the Coast Guard?

I don't think I've ever tried smoked brisket either. Gotta visit Texas and try some. :)

Being told what not to do -- nobody likes that. And now you've got me hungry for brisket!

I bet Carol is learning even more stuff about her cast while you're all doing the A-Z.

Seems as if Taylor has her goals laid out and her individual tastes clearly defined. Good for her.

Snow White. That is an interesting choice. I wonder what distinguishes her from the other fairy tale characters... hmmmm. Doesn't like being told what to do... shocking.
Taylor sounds like she welcomes a challenge... a bit of a rebel maybe... one who likes to go against the grain...?

Thanks, Michael. We all need goals.

Two Michaels in a row. Cool. It's the authority that comes with the uniform, Michael #2.

Several, Bish. And four female admirals.

LR, yes you do!

So true, Jan. I've made myself hungry for it, too :)

I'm laughing, J.L. Just the other day Carol said she wished we'd told her some of this stuff a couple years ago.

Lee, yes I do. I keep five and ten-year goal plans.

Robin, I think all women are alike on that one. You'll have to read Solomon's Compass to find out about Snow White.

Michelle, I'm not afraid of stepping up when it's necessary. I prefer to lead by example.
Good to meet Taylor.

Nice to meet you, Taylor! Being in the Coast Guard for 17 yrs pretty much says you don't like being told what NOT to do. You're definitely your own person in command there. (I secretly think you and Carol have that in common, you know?)

I don't like to be told not to do something either, Taylor. It's the fastest way to get me to do it, in fact. :P

Just popping in to say I'm still alive and haven't forgotten about you, Carol. :)

The trials and tribs of being an independent woman! ;)
No one likes to be told what to do!

Sorry I'm a few days behind. I'll catch up now!

Nas, good to meet you, too.

Sometimes you just gotta take the bull by the horns, Laura. Know what I mean?

Melissa, same with me.

Exactly like that, Trisha.

So true, Heather.
Great post, Carol. I'd say you have a really good handle on your characters.

I like the sound of Taylor. But I'll have to read Compass (and I want to anyway) to find out the difference between a commander and a captain.

Brisket, ocean, and Snow White? This is a woman who knows who she is. So fun to finally hear from Taylor!

Sounds like another great character Carol!

Julie
It is very nice to meet you Taylor. And indeed - don't tell me to do something without good reason. And even if you think your reasons are good I may not. Sound familiar?
Carol Kilgore said…
Carol pretty much knows us inside out, Susan.

Helena, a captain in the Coast Guard and Navy is the same thing as a colonel in the Army, Air Force, and Marines. A commander is one rank beneath, or a lieutenant colonel in the other services. You can see everything here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Coast_Guard_officer_rank_insignia

VR, since I showed up so late, I think Carol may name her next protagonist Aanya.

I think we're all cool, Julie.

Good to meet you, too, EC. You understand exactly. Maybe we're sisters.
What a great character...........

I want to know why he likes Snow White!!!! :D

I love Snow White.

I don't like it when people order me around to do or not do something.
Nick Wilford said…
I had to read it twice because I thought Taylor was a man at first. Now I get it! It sounds like she knows her own mind, that's for sure.
Carol Kilgore said…
Ack! I can't believe I missed your comments here.

Jo-Anne - I'm glad you like her!

Stina - Taylor is a she. You'll have to read Solomon's Compass to find out.

Medeia - Cool. I don't like to be told what to do or not to do either.

Nick - Yes, she does.
