A-Z Solomon's Compass Style: Helicopters

Welcome A-Z bloggers!
And everyone else, of course :)
My A-Z posts are all about my new book, SOLOMON'S COMPASS.
Read the A post to learn who AJ is.

Hi, All!

AJ again.

How many of you have ridden on a helicopter? Anyone know how to fly one?

I've ridden on one and watched mechanics work on them, but that's the extent of my knowledge. Even so, I'm excited to get to talk to about something that has an engine.

The main reason we're talking about helicopters is because Taylor is responsible for the one that's attached to her cutter. Not that she flies it, but when it's tethered to the Susquehanna or she gives the authorization to fly, the responsibility is all hers.

This post probably won't be as fancy as when Carol writes them. She said I get to do all the research, too. So since I'm itching to go out and catch some fish, this may be copy and paste.

I went to my old friend, Wikipedia and found a photo of the type of helicopter on Taylor's cutter. It's a HH-65C Dolphin, like this one.

When this helicopter flies, it carries either a  four or five-member crew. They have all kinds of nifty electronic gadgets, including autopilot that frees the pilot and co-pilot to actively participate in an eyes-on search for people or objects in the sea. Or for other duties as may be necessary.

You can find more information about U.S. Coast Guard helicopters here and here

And . . .

A helicopter makes an appearance in SOLOMON'S COMPASS, too. But that's all I'm allowed to say :)

õ

This is Carol.

Today I'm a guest of Mistress Snark at Laura Eno's blog. Please send positive thoughts my way. I've tried really hard to be especially nice to Jezebel since my previous visit. But you know how she is. And I mean that in the very nicest way possible. I really do.

Comments

Jezebel seemed to let Carol off (relatively) lightly today. Perhaps the cat alphabet has mellowed her.

I am not a fan of helicopters. Not at all. Or perhaps from the ground only. I think fishing is a much better option AJ - good decision to leave the helicopter and go back out onto the water.
Helicopters are very important to the Coast Guard.
And I'm sure you were awesome at Mistress Snark's.

Haven't ridden in a helicopter yet. It's one of those things I'd love to do. Checking you out later. Have fun!

Loved your visit with Jezebel! And thanks for the helo lesson. :)
Hi, AJ. I would LOVE to ride on a helicopter.

Love the CG helicopter!

Hi y'all. This is Carol.

AJ had an emergency this morning, but he'll be back in just a bit. Good thing, too, cause there's a lot going on.

I have to hustle over to Mistress Snark's. I'm really trying to be nice to Jezebel. Her punch sometimes turns me into a wild woman.

Uh oh-- good luck with that sassy Jezebel. I'm heading over to see if I can lend you some good juju.
Someday I'll get a ride on a helicopter and I pray it's not with Mercy Flight!!!

Helicopters are a fantastic emergency machine. It can shoot straight up and land almost anywhere...

Would I ever go in one? I don't think so... especially the ones with no doors... LOL. At this moment I am thinking of the I LOVE LUCY episode.... LOL.

Don't forget your book is featured at my blog tomorrow!

Helicopters are so great for all kinds of rescues, but since I am still so scared of heights, you are not likely to find me aboard one. Unless it's an emergency......

I'm intrigued by helicopters...and my boys love them of course!
I'll have to put a helicopter ride on my bucket list! I've yet to start this list... don't know when that will happen...

I have a small $20.00 radio-controlled helicopter sitting on my desk at work, and I fly it around the office sometimes pretending it's a drone.

I've flown over and into the Grand Canyon on a helicopter. THAT was an OH WOW experience!

AJ Here! Back at the Tiki Hut!

Plumbing emergency. Then the guy needed a special part. But things are good to go now. So to speak.

I think Carol and Jezebel may become friends. One day.

EC - I agree. Much better to bob on the water than fly through the air in a mechanical bumblebee.

Alex - Yes, very important.

J.L. - Enjoy the ride, whenever you take it.

Linda G - No prob.

Teresa - Talk to Joy. Y'all can go together and share experiences.

Michelle - You should see inside!

Hello, Carol! It would be cool to ride in a helicopter, especially if it was in the Caribbean!

I took a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and it was awesome!

I hope your back is okay after Jezebel's antics, Carol. :)

I've been in a helicopter before. They're very cool. However, it's not something I do regularly.
Carol Kilgore said…
Julie - From what I understand about Jezebel, Carol can use all the good juju you have to spare.

Cathrina - You and me, both!

Michael - It's the shooting straight up, and straight down, that gets me. Carol is so excited about being at your place...you wouldn't believe.

Inger - That's the way I look at it. If it's necessary, OK. But don't tempt fate.

Michelle - First you need to find a clean bucket :)

I really want to ride in a helicopter one day. :-)

Rula - I'm sure your boys love them. Maybe they'll be pilots.

Michael O - My kind of flying!

Bish - Into? Wow!

Laura - The water down there is beautiful. Take your camera!

Yvonne - Thanks for commenting.
I've never had the pleasure of riding on a helicopter so far. Only through the books I read.

I went on a helicopter ride in the Caribbean on honeymoon. Seemed like the pilot was trying to show off all his fanciest tricks. We loved it although my wife's lunch nearly got ejected!

I've never been in a helicopter. I fear they might freak me out. Although, I did like riding in a small plane once -- took a puddle jumper from Nevis to St. Kitts. Sat right behind the pilot. Could have flicked him in the ear, but I didn't.

I've ridden on a helicopter before as part of an excursion on a cruise. It was a lot of fun and the pilot, like Nick's pilot, showed off a bunch of his tricks.

I hope that I never have to ride in a helicopter. I have ridden in a very small plane that sat something like 9 people. Scared the daylights out of me. I did not like it one bit.
Carol Kilgore said…
Sorry! I got involved with something else going on, and I'm just now getting back here.

Jan - I hear you!

Julie - I just talked to Carol, and she thinks she's almost back to normal.

Clarissa - I wouldn't want to do it regularly either.

Misha - Put it on your list!

Nas - One day. If you choose :)

Nick - Some of them are hotshots.

M Pax - LOL! You might have regretted doing that!

Cynthia - I'm glad you had fun.

Robin - I hope you'll be able to avoid a helicopter. Good luck!

Jez really enjoyed your visit today, Carol! She thinks your green spots are grand. ;)

I haven't been in a helicopter yet. Hopefully it will have doors when I do.
Mistress Snark? I'll check her out after I comment. I hope she was nice!

I was once going to buy helicopter lessons for myself, then realized that since I was afraid of planes, I'd probably just freak out in a helicopter... It would still be a great skill to have for the zombie apocalypse.

Hugs!

This is Carol. AJ has gone home for the evening.

Laura - I think the spots are jumping off and infecting others with Jezebel's spell :)

Tui - Mistress Snark isn't bad, but I hope you took care not to rouse Jezebel :)

Valerie - If you didn't freak, it would be an awesome skill! Great to meet you :)

It's wonderful that you have a helicopter in Compass -- that's the kind of detail that can give a love story a sharp, intriguing edge.

I only rode in a helicopter once and it was in a tour of NYC. Fun and noisy.
Just going to say yes I have ridden in an helicopter when I was a child and I loved it.......

Medeia - You'll know when the time is right.

Helena - Good that you enjoyed your ride.

Jo-Anne - Remembering fun times when we were kids is a great thing to do.

Elise - Nice meeting you, too!

Mama J - If you ever find yourself having to ride in one, take a deep breath and think 'AJ did it. I can, too.'
