Luckenbach, Texas

Over the weekend we drove to Luckenbach with a group of friends.



It's a large place.



Silent.


No place to dance as the day wears on.


No place for writers to wait for an answer to submissions.



Just a town - like any other.



Only in Texas!

I remember a country song way back when that talked about this town. Can't remember the artist but from the song I thought it was a more significant locale :)

Kimberly - Yup, that's what it is!

Claudia - The town is for real, but it's probably the tiniest one in Texas. The post office used to be for real - now it's a gift shop.

Karen - Willie Nelson

Laura - I think Armadillo is #3 :)

Like any other? Haha, maybe in Texas. Lovely place, quite obviously! What does Willie Nelson say about Luckenbach? It sounds like a German name. Bach meaning brook.

Angela - I went to find a link for the lyrics, and to my surprise ... I found not only Willie Nelson but also Waylon Jennings and Kenny Chesney sing this song. Basically it's about getting back to basics. Luckenbach is next to Grape Creek (a brook) and was settled by German immigrants in the mid 1800s.

RaShelle - We did have a great time.

Alex - It's the only one of its kind around here, too, although lots of tiny Texas towns have dancehalls.

Talli - In real life it does, too, except the buildings ARE old, not just made to look that way.

Patti - No Waylon. No Willie. Lotsa boys, though....

I always envisioned Lukenbach as a ‘real’ city - looks like a fun place to stop, though.

Never been to Luckenbach, but stopped in Fredricksburg on our way to Houston last year. Would like to have gotten some German food but it was too early for any of those restaurants to be open so we settled for a quick stop at McDonalds.

Jane - Definitely not a city, but real. Definitely fun.

Next to real travel vicarious travel is one of my fave pastimes, especially when it includes an armadillo with a guitar. Thank you so much for taking a photo of the sign. I always try to do that, helps my memory. I wonder if there are any members of the original Luckenbach's still living there? Love the mention of Russell "Hondo" Crouch's purchase of the town center in 1970. Hondo? Doesn't that mean deep in Spanish? Deep Crouch - hee hee!

I don't think any Luckenbach's still live there, but I could be wrong. It is a little funny about Hondo :)

That’s a peculiar name for a town (is it large enough to be a town) in Texas. The population blows me away. It’s so huge!

The joys of a small town! I lived in a town where after 7 or 8:00, the only place to get a soda was the bar or the next town over. No pop machines and the only store closed!

Wow. I've never lived anyplace that small. But I have lived in a beach town that turned off the traffic signals in the winter. That town wasn't in Texas.
