Let's Get Busy!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend as much as I did.

What did I do that was so special?

And it was awesome.

I read. Watched an old movie. Listened to music. Played with the dogs. Relaxed. Recharged.

I spent less than an hour each day doing anything productive computer-wise or writing-wise.

I am ready to get back to business!

Today I'm chatting with Emily King at Get Busy Writing. After my lazy weekend, I better Get Busy Writing :)

Oh, yeah...I've heard rumors that Emily is doing a giveaway.

You Want Tacos With That?

All right! Look at everybody. Carol said just a few folks would be stopping in. I guess I better introduce myself before you call the blog police to find out why I'm here instead of her.

My name's Charlie Duran. I've lived in South Texas all my life, and right now I call Padre Island home. I own the Pink Tortilla. It's plain and simple, but it's been good to me and my family. Gabriel Duran is my son. You'll find out about Gabriel and the Pink Tortilla when you read IN NAME ONLY.

Carol said I shouldn't tell you anything that would be a spoiler for the story. From my perspective, that's not easy. So I guess I'll tell you that except for Summer, I was the first one of us to introduce myself to her. She didn't change too much about me - just moved me a few miles east to Padre Island instead of leaving me on Corpus Christi Beach where we first met. I can't complain about that.

I guess you're wondering where to find Carol.

Today she went over to chat at Sia McKye Over Coffee. Tell her I sent the cabana boys down to the pier to bring back some specks. I'm going to serve up some fish tacos for a lunch special.

Codes R Us. Or Not.

What do codes have to do with Tiki Huts? Or Mondays?

If I knew how to construct a real code. I'd make a mini-message here for your to decipher so you'd know.

Since I know little to nothing beyond kindergarten-level codes, I'll just come out and say it.

Today I'm visiting with Clarissa Draper at Listening to the Voices...

Clarissa is the author of The Sholes Key. If you enjoy mysteries and codes and you haven't read her book yet, go to Amazon and purchase it on your way to her blog. You'll be happy you did.

Oh worries. We're not talking in code or about codes over there.

Would I lie?

P.S. No codes allowed in the comments. Regular English only, please :)

Gabe Duran, Fire Captain

Hi. Captain Gabe Duran. Corpus Christi Fire Department. How are you?

When Carol created me for IN NAME ONLY, she said she didn't know much about firefighters except they put out fires and made sexy calendars. I told her if she wanted to write about us, she needed to learn. She set me aside for a few weeks, and when she came back, she knew what we were made of. And she didn't waste any time.

She brought in a couple of beers, sat down across from me, and said, "Talk. I want to know everything about you."

"I'm a busy man. What's in it for me?"

She showed me a photo of Summer Newcombe. "This woman is going to need your help."

What can I say? By the time I finished talking, Carol knew it all - even some things that were probably better left secret seeing all the trouble they caused.

Today Carol's over at Elizabeth Spann Craig's blog, Mystery Writing Is Murder. She didn't say, but I know she'd like you to stop in and say hi if you have time.

Good talking to you. I'm on duty today, and I need to work out. Unless we get a call, I'll be around.

Summer's Story

My name is Summer Newcombe. Carol asked me to post here today because she's over at Mason Canyon's blog, Thoughts in Progress.

I'm supposed to introduce myself to you and not be too wordy about it. When you read IN NAME ONLY, you'll learn all about me, so that's not too important. I can tell you that Summer Newcombe isn't my real name. It's the name the U.S. Marshals gave me when they brought me to Padre Island.

Come closer.

What's really important is that I have a secret to tell you. It's sort of about me, but it's really about Carol. In her frenzy of telling you about IN NAME ONLY and getting it put together for you to read, a strange thing occurred.

Carol forgot to tell you about NEVER SAY MY NAME. And she's going to be embarrassed when she learns I told you. But she can handle it okay. She's like that.

NEVER SAY MY NAME is a short story that explains the predicament that got me into the mess with the Federal Witness Security Program to begin with. It's where I first met Carol. And no, I don't have the crazy Witness Protection t-shirt she showed you a few weeks ago. She was messing with you. She's like that, too.

Now I'm going jogging on the beach. I'll be back later to answer your comments.

When you go say hi to Carol at Thoughts in Progress, please don't tell her I told you about NEVER SAY MY NAME. It can stay our secret, and I'll tell her over a beer and a plate of my brownies tonight.

Oh...there's an added surprise at the end.

See you in the book!

NEVER SAY MY NAME is available at Amazon in Kindle format only for US$0.99.

UPDATE: IN NAME ONLY garnered its first review on Amazon! Four lovely gold stars! Read it here.

Maybe my left eye will stop twitching now. Or tomorrow. Or next week.

My baby is finally out there on its own.

It's thrilling. It's scary. It's a little sad. Summer's nest is empty. But she's flying!

Getting IN NAME ONLY from a concept to a real book I can read on my Kindle and hold in my hands has been an amazing journey. And I had so much fun along the way. Despite how it may seem as I ranted over a few details here and there :)

For those of you who would like to read Summer Newcombe's story, here are direct links:

The next time you visit Amazon, today or whenever, I would also love it if you would click the LIKE button on my author page and by each of the books on it. Those LIKES figure into Amazon's algorithms in some way, and the more I have and my books have - just like YOUR pages and books - the better chance of showing up in Amazon promotions.

Thank you for anything you may do. I'll send you cyber coffee, chocolate, or wine in return :)

Also many thanks to those of you who are helping to spread the word around the interwebz this week for IN NAME ONLY.

I love all my followers.
You guys ROCK!

One More Day!

Let me just say, I only thought I was antsy before.

The way I'm bouncing around, you'd think I drank two full pots of coffee and ate a dozen Krispy Kremes.

I can barely focus enough to tweet. Or even pin.

And I call myself a writer?

Yes, I do!

Tomorrow my debut release launches into the world!

And did I mention I still really love this cover?

Oh. Just in case you may have missed it - just sayin' - y'all can help me by spreading the word. There will be prizes! Read HERE from last week for details.

In HUGE news...
One of my blogging friends, Julie Flanders at What Else Is Possible?, has a book column at, and this week she chose to interview me. You can read it HERE.

AND ... TOMORROW I will blog an EXTRA edition of Under the Tiki Hut

It's a rule.

Someone told me.

I forget who.

Like I wouldn't have figured it out.

And just shoot me if I start one more sentence with AND or end it with another exclamation point or use color because that particular statement is so important!

Onward ... to TOMORROW!

One More Week

And the winning team is: TEAM ROCKS!

The one random commenter from Team Rocks to win a copy of IN NAME ONLY is: Pam Asberry!

Pam, please let me know if you prefer the paperback or a Kindle book.

I'm so excited about IN NAME ONLY. Last week I received the proof of the print book. I had a goofy smile across my face all afternoon. I couldn't stop looking at it and touching it. Is that silly or what?

Finally I moved it to the bookshelf behind my desk so I could work. Now I only pick it up when I come to my desk. And I make myself put it back. One more week.

So . . .

I would love for everyone to participate in the launch next week by pasting something about the book on your blog or on Facebook. Or tweet about it. Whatever you feel comfortable doing. The book launches on Tuesday, July 10, but anything you do during next week will be most appreciated.

To make things a little easier, I made a page with everything I could think of that you might want to use. It's quite possible I forgot something, so let me know if you need anything else. It's the last tab to the right up above, directly beneath the banner photo - IN NAME ONLY - Media.

If you participate, please let me know.
I will put all your names in the hat.
The first name I draw is winner's choice of print or Kindle version of
The second will receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card.
The third will receive a $5 Amazon Gift Card.

I'm asking you to let me know because it's quite possible I won't see everything on my own and I don't want to miss anyone. You can post in the comments or let me know by Facebook or Twitter. If you haven't yet liked my author page or followed me on Twitter, the links to do so are in the sidebar. If you tag me or tell me, I will know where to look.

I will announce the winners on Monday, July 16.

In other news, I wish all of you here in the U.S. a safe and happy Independence Day. Even though I'm going to be here and be busy this week, I plan to take time to enjoy July 4.

Happy Monday!
