Read any good books lately?

Boogie says hi and he hopes all of you are having a good 2022 so far. He was found on a busy Houston street in March of last year and he found us through a local beagle rescue group in April. I can hardly wait to celebrate his first Gotcha Day!

It seems forever since I blogged, but I only missed two months. As much as I love all of you, I thoroughly enjoyed not having to write blog posts in December and January. Those of you who are long-term bloggers will totally understand where I'm coming from. But I missed chatting with all of you. So it was a trade-off.

Our holidays were wonderful and I hope yours were, too. Santa brought Boogie lots of toys! I came close to finishing my new novel--the first book in a new series--but I still have a couple of weeks to go. I'm not ready to talk about it yet, but stay tuned.

Speaking of books, what are you reading?

I was looking forward to a lot of reading during my blog break. Starting in about October, I started a string of books I could not finish. Does that ever happen to you? It does to me, but not often. Every two or three years, I start and close a lot of books in a row. I don't know if it's me or the books. Probably some of both.

I lost count of the books I started but didn't finish. It wasn't just one thing. Some contained too many errors--typos, grammar, formatting, things like that. Some were boring in various ways. Those were the major problems. I'm happy to say that none of these DNF books were by any authors that I know or have read before.

Does this ever happen to you? If so, is there a trick you use to work through it or do you just keep trying book after book? I'm so ready to read a good book!

It's February, so stay warm. Keep your significant other warm. And today is Groundhog Day! Did the groundhog see his shadow where you are? I'm hopeful for, but not expecting, an early and long spring.

Have a happy Valentine's Day. And if you're in the U.S., enjoy the long President's Day weekend.

See you next month.

Carol

Aww... sweet rescue story. I recently started reading a book but couldn't get into it. The first few pages were great...and then the story - and my interest - dropped. I couldn't connect with the main character. I felt bad because I know this author. Of course I kept my mouth shut because her agent and the publisher loved the story. Guess we all have our own tastes when it comes to books. Can't wait to hear about your new book and the series.

It takes a lot for me to not finish a book...but lately I've picked up a few books of short stories online from the library. The stories are good, but I think because there are natural breaks between then it has been easy for me to put them down. Before I know it, my online loan has expired...

How awesome you are almost done with your manuscipt. I haven't finished books I'm not enjoying for years now. There's too many books I want to read to do that. So you're not alone in not finishing some.

Boogie looks adorable. I have such a tall pile of books to read, I'm making inroads through that pile from last month.
Boogie found just the right home.
I took part of December off. It was nice but I also missed people here.
Welcome back. I missed you.
Boogie has come to just the right home.
Often when I am unable to finish a book it is about me. Unless the editing is woeful.
I keep trying. And don't discard books I haven't been able to finish until I have got out of that mindset.
Hooray for new books - and authors.
I didn't know about Gotcha Days...what a cool idea! He's a sweet little guy. :)

I've recently read "The Lost Man" by Jane Harper and "An Unwanted Guest" by Shari Lapena, both of which I enjoyed. I have such a big TBR pile that I ditch any books I'm not enjoying by 20 pages in.

You've described my entire experience reading manuscripts for DLP. LOL! I can fix typos, but too many grammar errors and boring parts and it's done.

Boogie is a cutie patootie!!!
I went through a stretch of about 6 books I couldn't finish a few weeks ago. Same as you, it doesn't happen often, but these were NOT for me :)
I always laugh at Groundhog Day. No matter what they say, we always have 6 weeks left of winter up here!

Sweet looking dog. I'm glad he found you. As for books, I went through a long streak of not being able to finish books I started. If they don't capture my interest, or the writing isn't all that good, or there are too many editorial mistakes I will put it down. I used to feel guilty about not finishing a book, but not any more. Life is short, I will never be able to read all the books I want to read as it is, so why waste time on something I don't enjoy. When I have these streaks I fall back on authors I know I'll enjoy, like currently I'm finishing up a Terry Pratchett book. Hiaasen is another. OR, I'll raid the children's section of the public library. MG novels rarely disappoint!

Leigh - That's what happened with me. It's well over a dozen books in a row. Maybe two dozen. It's making me crazy! Today I opened one by one of my favorite authors. If I can't get into this one, I'm going to leave reading alone until March and try again. I'm actually a little afraid to start this book because I love this author.

Liza - I used to ALWAYS finish every book I started. I always believed they would improve and I would be so happy I stuck with it. That never happened. So now I still will give the author several chances to get it right - and sometimes they do - but I don't hesitate to stop reading when they don't.

Natalie - I'm at that point close to starting the ending that I want to hurry and finish, but life keeps getting in the way and some days I can't type fast enough to keep up with the words in my head and I have to stop and read to see where I am.

Rachna - Boogie is really a sweetheart. My books are all on my Kindle. I don't even know how many. I need to have some kind of organization there.

Alex - Aww... I think he did, too :)

EC - These books are all on my Kindle. I'm afraid to take them off because I'm afraid I might buy them a second time.

Elizabeth - We don't know his birthday, but the vet thinks he was four last year. So he's now about five. He'll have a special Gotcha Day for sure.

I have a lot of books I want to read, too. I'd say 20 pages is about my limit, too. I'll check into those two you recommended. Thanks!

Diane - Remind me never to seek work as an acquiring editor!

Jemi - He is so cute. I can never resist his little face. We actually have Armadillo Day here with Bee Cave Bob. It was really foggy this morning but the sun came out later, so I don't know if he saw his shadow or not. It's 70 today; gonna be 28 tomorrow with wintry mix. Welcome to Texas, LOL!

Bish - I'm the same as you. I opened one by a favorite author today, but I only glanced at the first page. I'm a little scared to start reading, so I decided if I can't get into this one that I'm taking a month off reading and will try again in March. Life is too short for books that don't work for me.
If I'm not enjoying a book, I won't finish it, so yes it happens to me a lot. But there are plenty of books out there waiting their turn ;)

Adorable pup, I bet he loves being read to :) I'm reading a lot of WWII stuff right now actually.

Cute rescue pup! I've started a lot of books and they are good but I can't seem to finish them. I dunno what's up with that!
Carol Kilgore said…
Lynda - Exactly about all the books waiting their turn.

Mark - I have a new Kate Quinn book set in WWII that I want to read but I'm afraid I won't be able to read it. But I decided to give it a try. If it doesn't work, I'm going to be bookless until March. Then I'll try again.

HR - Maybe it's something going around :)

What a sweet puppy!

I'm glad you're back, and congrats on the new series. I'm envious of your time to write. I wanna retire from my day job. Whaaa. LOL

As far as DNF books, I rarely buy them anymore. But that's because I vet the heck out of them. The cover has to be reasonably professional, and the story description has to entice me (and that includes no errors in the blurb). I peek at the 2- and 3-star reviews to see what people are complaining about, to make sure it isn't something that would bother me. (Multiple comments about poor editing are a death blow.) And then, if the book passes all those tests, I use the 'Look inside' feature to read the first few paragraphs or pages. If I still like it, I buy it.

The exception is tried-and-true authors who have gained my trust. I'll preorder from them.
I have in the past only half read books in the past but now that I listen to audiobooks it is easier to deal with boring bits

Melissa - I do some of those things, but I may do them all from here on out. After about the 10th DNF book in a row, I've been afraid to try one by authors I know and like. But I'm getting ready to read one, so we'll see.

Jo-Anne - I can understand that. It makes sense.
Congrats on bringing Boogie into the family! I suspect we're in for a long, cold spring this year, no matter what the groundhog saw.
Hi Carol!
When I was younger, I would feel guilty if I started and didn't finish a book.
These days I'm not as accommodating - probably because there are so many books still waiting in line, and also the fact that time is just too tight.
Enjoy your February, Carol!

Shannon - Boogie's a sweetheart :)
I would much prefer a long, warm spring, but I'll really just be happy to be done with winter.

Michelle - I was the same. I don't fret over closing a book now, but I think I've closed about 20 in a row now without finishing even one. That kind of freaks me out.
