Comfort Food

Last Saturday, I made grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch.

I used to eat this food all the time when I was a kid. It was no big deal. But I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've eaten this meal as an adult - and I've been an adult for a lot longer than I was a kid :) I've eaten each one separate from the other many times, but not together.

When the bread was golden, I served it up. Flat bowls for the soup, sandwiches cut in half, and sliced dill pickle on the side. Just like Mom did when I was a kid.

Omigosh! Lunch was awesome, like going home again.

Then I struggled with how to tie all this into my life now and form it into some kind of coherent blog post that didn't leave you wondering WTH.

I started to write it from Gracie's viewpoint. Or Nick's. His made me laugh, but it was too short. Waa-ay too short. Besides, it could be a scary thing mixing fictional characters with my Real Life.

So I decided to just tell you that if you're stressed out over 2020 life like me, you can go home again... almost. Close enough to feel like you got a big hug and a bandage on your scraped knee. And you know everything's going to be okay 'cause Mom said so.

All you have to do is fix yourself something to eat that's just like Mom used to make. Then you'll feel all better and ready to go outside and play again.

In Book News

My next book sale will start at the end of June and be running when I blog again in July (can you believe it's already mid-year?! I cannot.) So I will blog about it then.

I'm hard at work on the next Gracie book and am at the halfway point. It's going to be filled with lots of great stuff. However, as I am the slowest writer on the planet, please send good vibes out there that I will finish this new novel in time for a Spring or Summer 2021 release.

I'll be back here on Wednesday, July 1, which would have been my parents' wedding anniversary. See you then and #StaySafe.

Hugs,

Carol

Bet I'm slower than you!
I'm not big on soup but I definitely am a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches. They are comforting.
That sounds like the perfect comfort meal! I haven't had that combination for ages, either, and now is just about the right time for it. :)

I have tomato soup most of the time now so that I can make that comfort meal when I need it. Comfort food is good. Glad you're making progress on your novel.

An Instacart order came with 18 hot dogs, not the six I ordered for Memorial Day grilling. In this COVID world, the store wouldn't take them back. So, this week my comfort food was what we called "Weenie Beanies" growing up. I chopped up a couple of hot dogs into bite-sized pieces and added them to a can of baked beans I'd doctored with onions and mustard, then heated the whole thing in the oven until the onions were tender. One bite, and I was back in my mother's kitchen again.
I am sending huge positive wishes to you and to Gracie.
I was always given tomato soup (without the grilled cheese) when I was unwell as a child. Classic comfort food.
Like baked rice pudding.

Alex - Maybe we need to have a race, LOL!

Elizabeth - I was surprised at how comforting it was.

Mason - Thanks! I need them :)

Diane - Yep :)

Natalie - Thanks, I am too. Last year I didn't write.

Liza - I haven't even thought about "Weenie Beanies" in years. Now I want them! We had them the same way with mustard and onions. Sometimes Worcestershire sauce, too. Baked. Same name. Maybe there was a recipe somewhere?
