Alex the Great AND Follow Fest!

Part One
As promised ... the Ninja himself - Alex J. Cavanaugh - answering three questions:

Ninja Secrets Revealed

The first thing Carol asked me to share was something unique about myself. I was hoping for juicy dirt :) That proved harder than I expected, as I’m just a regular guy who’s lived a normal, boring, and safe life. Mmm hmmm...I still want dirt :) What could I tell you that was unique and new?

I decided I would share a few random things instead.

I used to live in Arizona and my brother and I would ride our bikes through the desert. One time we’d stopped for a moment only to hear a loud rattle. I guarantee you've never seen two kids pedal faster in your life. And you told your mother this when you were what? 30? 35? WHAT? You haven't told her yet?!

I lived in Japan for a while and I remember getting lots of attention from Japanese women. And candy! Did I mention free candy? Bribery. Or as they say in Japan (per Google): Zōshūwai. Was it Hot Tamales???

Horses and I don’t get along. Last time I was on a horse he kept trying to bite me and nearly backed into a deep pit. He wanted your candy!

I've probably seen a hundred concerts in my lifetime. No joke! I'm not at all surprised. Did you take your candy?

My wife thought I was obnoxious when we first met. Yeah, I probably was back then. Maybe it's because you wouldn't share your candy. Or because she couldn't kiss you through your ninja mask :)

When living in London, I visited every castle I could find. I even had to fight a dragon in a dungeon. No wait – that was during a game of Dungeons and Dragons! I really did visit a lot of castles though. Do dragons like candy?

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

What I've learned most about writing this series is the importance of love.

For one thing, it became the overall theme of my series. I didn't plan it that way, but each book focuses on a different aspect – the love for a brother, the love for a spouse, and the love for a child. Love shows up in most books in one form or another because people crave it. As a Christian, my God embodies every kind of love, so to me it’s vital. Excellent theme! Love is the most important thing in this world.

I also learned how important love is when it comes to friendships. My series wouldn't be a success without the unwavering support of my fans and friends, especially online. So many have given freely, without expecting anything in return, and that’s true love.

A Story in A Story in A Story . . .

You asked if there was a story within the story, and the character of Piten comes to mind. You’ll meet him in CassaStorm, but he nearly didn't happen. His scene was to be small and he didn't even have a name. My critique partner, Rusty Webb, suggested a stronger scene, one that changed the course of the storyline. Once I began altering the last third of the outline, the character took on a new role and became a pivotal part of the story. He went from a no name character to one of my favorite secondary characters, and I hope others enjoy him as well. Cool! Does he like candy :)

Thanks, Carol! I hope I have amused everyone.

You amused me :)
Thank you for guest blogging with me, Alex. You're welcome here anytime.

Great interview, Yes, I suppose he could be called Alexander The Great.Oh but I do wish he wouldn't be so shy and show a photo of himself!!!!!.

I lived in Tucson for many years. As an avid hiker and rock climber, I've had a few brushes with rattlers. Not fun!
Wonderful interview. Always nice to learn more about the Ninja - and welcome back. You have been missed.
Hey Carol! Thanks for hosting - and adding to the interview. Yes, I do have a Hot Tamale obsession.
And awesome to have to back again.
Oh, and I told my mother after we moved from Arizona!
Great interview, Carol! And nice to find out more about Alex. :) I didn't realize he'd lived in so many cool places (I like castles, too, Alex! And I lived in London for a semester in college...loved it.)
Melissa said…
I'm now hooked on Hot Tamales, thanks to Alex. LOL

Thanks for participating in Follow Fest! :D

Hi Carol. Welcome back.

I think he's a candy hoarder.

I also know those secondary characters can take over. That's how I ended up with five books in my series.

Do you like candy crush?

Love is all we need!

Funny stuff.
Elizabeth, living in London for a while was awesome.

Melissa, my work here is done...

David, actually no...
Pat Hatt said…
haha great interview and the ninja wannabe sure has a thing for candy, or maybe you do lol
Alex and I have way more in common than I thought, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. You bring the Japanese candy (I hope it's shrimp flavored!), and I'll bring the live recording of the hundredth concert I just went to. Now let's play some D&D.

I'm so happy to be back! Looking forward to getting back in touch. I will be around to all your blogs throughout the week.

Alex - It's good you finally fessed up to your mom :)

Thanks to all for stopping by and commenting!

Nice post!

Now, I know Alex is a world traveler too!

It's nice to learn new things about our favorite people!

It was nice to learn a few things about Alex. And your comments, Carol... had me giggling.

Welcome back. I hope your time away was productive and enjoyable.

Alex, you got to live in London for a while and visit castles? Man, you are so lucky. I'd give anything to live in Britain for awhile and visit every castles in the country. I've managed to visit a few of them during family trips, but my wife usually had to drag me out of them kicking and screaming. When I began plotting my first book, I knew there would have to be a castle or two in it.
Brandon and Bryan, you got it! No horses though.

Heather, lived and traveled all over.

Holly, probably!

Ken, I wish we'd visited more countries when I was there. Managed to see four though.

I lived in Tucson for a year and enjoyed it very much. The people were super nice, and it was outdoor friendly (don't think I met a snake, just scorpions) as far as activities go. Soccer/softball fields, pools, indoor/outdoor running tracks. I sort of miss it :) Thanks for sharing, Alex.

Hi Carol!
I've never been close to a rattlesnake, so that sounds terrifying. Dragons are really hard.
Way to go, you guys. Now I'm craving candy...
Rusty Carl said…
Those are some great personal stories there. Great job!

Oh, and I saw my name up there, I feel better about it being Monday already!

Absolutely adored this interview, Carol. I was entertained by the questions and even more so by your additions.

Candy anyone? And yes, I indirectly blame the Ninja Captain for my recently acquired Hot Tamales obsession lol!!!
Sherry Ellis said…
How interesting that you lived in Japan and England. Did you learn how to be a ninja in Japan? ;)
Crystal Collier said…
LOL. His wife thought he was obnoxious... That's funny stuff--mostly because I thought my husband was rather pompous when we met. Maybe he was, but he knew how to treat a lady, and that wins out every time. ;)
DG, I did my best.

Lee, you'll just have to wonder...

Angela, I'll take the blame!

Sherry, it probably had its beginnings there.

Crystal, I was an obnoxious charmer I guess.
Andrew Leon said…
But -why- did you live in Japan? Was it for your secret ninja training? And is the where the accident happened that caused your consciousness to be uploaded into a computer and, later, the Internet?

Great interview. My husband lived in Japan for a long time...wonder if he and Alex ever unknowingly crossed paths.
I found these snippets of information fascinating. Not only because Alex is fascinating, but also because he shares so little. Now we know, Carol, that if you work candy into the plot, you'll get the Ninja revealing the entire story. Mention Hot Tamales, and we get to the climax quickly. Well, no, but it sounds good (and, well, inappropriate. Sorry), right?

I really enjoyed this interview, Alex and Carol.

Thank you,

Well done Carol n' Alex-I enjoyed your banter!

Love is key-my husband was an annoying customer-at the store I was working at. I went home and my brother had invited him over.
Funny how that works out ;D
Carol, glad you're back! I'll work on a TBR list this week!

Alex, I cannot imagine you being obnoxious! For someone who doesn't like flying, you've been all over. Japan! And I envy you England and all the castle. Dreamy!!! I think scorpions would scare me more than snakes. We used to swim with snakes in the creek.
One of the better interviews I've read, Carol! And your extra comments were hilarious.

Great to get to know you even better, Alex! Loved learning the background behind Piten's character. A very cool character in Storm.

And yes! When I visited England I HAD to visit as many castles as I could as well. And gee, they have a lot of castles over there.
Julie, I guess that's why non-science fiction fans like them.

Ella, for some of us darned lucky how it worked out!

Word, no thanks on the snakes. And we did get scorpions in the house.

Lynda, the castles are everywhere! And you can probably appreciate how Piten evolved.
Wonderful interview! The little personal tidbits were great, and I liked all those comments about candy. :) It sounds like you've had some great adventures in life, Alex!
And love is definitely the most important theme of all.

What a fun interview, Alex! I noticed your partner in crime forgot all about the juicy dirt once candy was mentioned. Clearly her priorities are in the right place. :)

I can relate to horse issues. I saw someone thrown from a "sweet, gentle" beast once for whatever reason (never figured out why). The girl was hurt badly. That was the last time I was on a horse.

Next time that you um, Alex, visit London, I shall make sure they don't throw you in the Tower of London. I shall have the parade in your honour (honor) nicely organised. It will be you in the parade and not your clone. Right, Alex?

Part two. One moment please, Carol. Arrggghhhhh!!!! NOT another blogfest! Make them STOP! Sorry about that. Phew.

I know of you very well, Carol. Heck, we both are there on good old 'Farcebook'! :)

Alex? Aren't you supposed to share?

Yes, each of your books do, indeed, focus on love (and fun adventures). I think this one is my favorite because of that. There is a rich love between Byron and Athee--nice humor too, and the love of their son. I love how Byron learns to demonstrate that quality better. Bassan certainly does and my favorite secondary character, next to Piten (who I love) is Umbarce. He's pretty cool!

Enjoyed the post Carol and Alex. Sorry for being so late to the party...
