As promised ... the Ninja himself - Alex J. Cavanaugh - answering three questions:
Ninja Secrets Revealed
The
first thing Carol asked me to share was something unique about myself. I was hoping for juicy dirt :) That
proved harder than I expected, as I’m just a regular guy who’s lived a normal,
boring, and safe life. Mmm hmmm...I still want dirt :) What could I tell you that was unique and new?
I
decided I would share a few random things instead.
I
used to live in Arizona and my brother and I would ride our bikes through the
desert. One time we’d stopped for a moment only to hear a loud rattle. I
guarantee you've never seen two kids pedal faster in your life. And you told your mother this when you were what? 30? 35? WHAT? You haven't told her yet?!
I
lived in Japan for a while and I remember getting lots of attention from
Japanese women. And candy! Did I mention free candy? Bribery. Or as they say in Japan (per Google): Zōshūwai. Was it Hot Tamales???
Horses
and I don’t get along. Last time I was on a horse he kept trying to bite me and
nearly backed into a deep pit. He wanted your candy!
I've probably seen a hundred concerts in my lifetime. No joke! I'm not at all surprised. Did you take your candy?
My
wife thought I was obnoxious when we first met. Yeah, I probably was back then. Maybe it's because you wouldn't share your candy. Or because she couldn't kiss you through your ninja mask :)
When
living in London, I visited every castle I could find. I even had to fight a
dragon in a dungeon. No wait – that was during a game of Dungeons and Dragons!
I really did visit a lot of castles though. Do dragons like candy?
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
What I've learned most about writing this series is the importance of love.
For
one thing, it became the overall theme of my series. I didn't plan it that way,
but each book focuses on a different aspect – the love for a brother, the love
for a spouse, and the love for a child. Love shows up in most books in one form
or another because people crave it. As a Christian, my God embodies every kind
of love, so to me it’s vital. Excellent theme! Love is the most important thing in this world.
I
also learned how important love is when it comes to friendships. My series wouldn't be a success without the unwavering support of my fans and friends,
especially online. So many have given freely, without expecting anything in
return, and that’s true love.
A Story in A Story in A Story . . .
You
asked if there was a story within the story, and the character of Piten comes
to mind. You’ll meet him in CassaStorm, but he nearly didn't happen. His scene
was to be small and he didn't even have a name. My critique partner, Rusty
Webb, suggested a stronger scene, one that changed the course of the storyline.
Once I began altering the last third of the outline, the character took on a
new role and became a pivotal part of the story. He went from a no name
character to one of my favorite secondary characters, and I hope others enjoy
him as well. Cool! Does he like candy :)
Thanks,
Carol! I hope I have amused everyone.
You amused me :)
Thank you for guest blogging with me, Alex. You're welcome here anytime.

From the Amazon Best Selling Series!
A storm gathers across the galaxy…
Commanding
the Cassan base on Tgren, Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him.
As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon the desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is
threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.
After
enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his
own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in
his son, threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.
Meanwhile
the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all
life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty
years ago could return. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a
connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

All my general links are over there in my right-hand sidebar. Starting at the top with the link to my Amazon Author Page.
Moving through Google Friend Connect, Bloglovin', Feedly and to subscribe by email in order to connect to this blog.
Then there are the other social links - you'll recognize the icons for all the usual suspects. My Facebook for writers link is my regular timeline. My Facebook for readers link is my Facebook Author Page. You are invited to friend or like me or both. I put up different content on each.
If you click on the "G" for Goodreads link and scroll down just a little, you'll see both my books. I would love if you added them to your to-be read shelves. I tried to add the widget to the sidebar for you to do that directly, but either the widget or I failed to perform correctly. I'm betting it was operator error :)
This is my first week back after a five-week hiatus. It will likely take me all week to get around to all your blogs.
See you back here next Monday!
See you back here next Monday!
Comments
Yvonne.
And awesome to have to back again.
Oh, and I told my mother after we moved from Arizona!
Thanks for participating in Follow Fest! :D
I've been here before...just get the names confused. "Who has the 'Under the Tiki Hut' blog again?" Oh...Carol! Come see me!
M.L. Swift, Writer
I think he's a candy hoarder.
I also know those secondary characters can take over. That's how I ended up with five books in my series.
Love is all we need!
Funny stuff.
Melissa, my work here is done...
David, actually no...
Alex - It's good you finally fessed up to your mom :)
Thanks to all for stopping by and commenting!
Now, I know Alex is a world traveler too!
It's nice to learn new things about our favorite people!
Heather
Have a great week! :)
Welcome back. I hope your time away was productive and enjoyable.
Heather, lived and traveled all over.
Holly, probably!
Ken, I wish we'd visited more countries when I was there. Managed to see four though.
Hi Carol!
Oh, and I saw my name up there, I feel better about it being Monday already!
Rusty, we can all thank you for Piten!
Nice job of digging deeper, Carol!
You managed to bring out more about the Ninja Capt'n. Liked your little asides too.
Alex - you did manage to find some more interesting tidbits. Anecdotes are always fun to read. Thanks for sharing!
Lee
Tossing It Out
Candy anyone? And yes, I indirectly blame the Ninja Captain for my recently acquired Hot Tamales obsession lol!!!
Lee, you'll just have to wonder...
Angela, I'll take the blame!
Sherry, it probably had its beginnings there.
Crystal, I was an obnoxious charmer I guess.
I really enjoyed this interview, Alex and Carol.
Thank you,
xoRobyn
Arlee - LOL! I'd like to see photo proof, too :)
Angela - Glad you enjoyed!
Follow-Festers - It's likely I won't get to your blogs today ... but I'll be there eventually.
Johanna, only if he lived there a very long time ago...
Robyn, that made me laugh!
Suzanne, if I do, I'll be ready.
When I first started writing I heard a gifted speaker say that all good stories are love stories even though they might not be romances. After food and shelter, all anyone wants is love.
Love,
Janie
Ahem.
Take care
x
Why do I find myself craving candy right now?
Robyn - Well, I guess if we couldn't find dirt, we create our own :)
Milo - Thanks. I'm finding we think we follow everyone everywhere, but turns out we miss here and there. Thanks to Melissa for Follow Fest!
Janie - I missed everyone, too, especially the first few days and the last few.
Rhonda - I'm glad you liked!
Old Kitty - Giggle :)
Quanie - Great to meet you, too! I will be around to return the likes, friends, and follows as soon as possible.
thank you for putting a smile on my face.
Congrats to Alex and it's always fun finding out more about my blogging buddies.
Kitty, sorry!
Christine, if I ever write a fantasy, I'm set.
LG, yes we are.
Thanks everyone!
Well done Carol n' Alex-I enjoyed your banter!
Love is key-my husband was an annoying customer-at the store I was working at. I went home and my brother had invited him over.
Funny how that works out ;D
Alex, I cannot imagine you being obnoxious! For someone who doesn't like flying, you've been all over. Japan! And I envy you England and all the castle. Dreamy!!! I think scorpions would scare me more than snakes. We used to swim with snakes in the creek.
Great to get to know you even better, Alex! Loved learning the background behind Piten's character. A very cool character in Storm.
And yes! When I visited England I HAD to visit as many castles as I could as well. And gee, they have a lot of castles over there.
Ella, for some of us darned lucky how it worked out!
Word, no thanks on the snakes. And we did get scorpions in the house.
Lynda, the castles are everywhere! And you can probably appreciate how Piten evolved.
And love is definitely the most important theme of all.
Funny how themes, and characters, can naturally insert themselves in a story.
Hi Carol; fabulous questions.
......dhole
And what a good way to be back--by interviewing Captain Ninja. Love the dialogue between you two.
Julie
Alex, it's better if a mother never ever hears some things. Trust me. She doesn't always want to know :)
Carrie, that made me chuckle!
Robin, a case of Hot Tamales will get me to talking!
Donna, I think travel adds so much to a person.
Julie, she tried!
T, some things I'll never tell.
Elise, think you will like Piten.
Hey, Joss! Thanks.
Nice to know a little more about Alex. Congrats on his new book!
Helena - Missed you, too!
Julie - I tried. Bribery is an awesome weapon :)
T.Drecker - Great to meet you! I'll be along to Follow Fest later in the week. I'm happy you enjoyed the interview :)
Joss - I'll be around to connect back later in the week. I'm glad you like my covers - due solely to my cover designer.
Nick - I did giggle! A lot :)
Best interview I've read with the Ninja Rocker. Seriously learned some stuff I didn't know. Mostly that he's also a world traveler! Who knew?
Loved your responses, Carol! :D
EJ, I have traveled a lot!
Thanks guys!
I can relate to horse issues. I saw someone thrown from a "sweet, gentle" beast once for whatever reason (never figured out why). The girl was hurt badly. That was the last time I was on a horse.
VR Barkowski
And horses and I don't get along either. The first horse I met bit me and the second took off running when I got into the saddle for my first ever riding lesson. They are beautiful animals but I make sure I admire them from afar.
Sara - Cool to meet you. I'll be getting around to everyone on Follow Fest later this week.
VR - I know! Totally forgot about the dirt. What kind of detective would I make, LOL!
Very similar to Harry Potter. So boring isn't so bad.
I liked what Alex said about love being an important part of his books. I've only read the first two so far, but I can definitely see what he means.
I loved that blogfest. Too bad I missed it. I didn't even know about it until Monday, and it was too late to participate because I had my giveaway planned.
Julie, what is it with biting horse?
Stephen, funny analogy!
Medeia, Hot Tamales for everyone!
Misha, thanks.
Stina, your computer screen would be soaked.
Aha, so was it really the ninja dude who visited your awesome site? Or perhaps it was one of his clones.
Next time that you um, Alex, visit London, I shall make sure they don't throw you in the Tower of London. I shall have the parade in your honour (honor) nicely organised. It will be you in the parade and not your clone. Right, Alex?
Part two. One moment please, Carol. Arrggghhhhh!!!! NOT another blogfest! Make them STOP! Sorry about that. Phew.
I know of you very well, Carol. Heck, we both are there on good old 'Farcebook'! :)
I think I did very well not going all cynical about blogfests or blog hops or alphabet challenges or....
Gary :)
Castles are cool. :)
Emily, I'm convinced horses are evil.
Nicki, he became a really fun character.
Alex? Aren't you supposed to share?
Yes, each of your books do, indeed, focus on love (and fun adventures). I think this one is my favorite because of that. There is a rich love between Byron and Athee--nice humor too, and the love of their son. I love how Byron learns to demonstrate that quality better. Bassan certainly does and my favorite secondary character, next to Piten (who I love) is Umbarce. He's pretty cool!
Enjoyed the post Carol and Alex. Sorry for being so late to the party...
Sia McKye Over Coffee
Candy has its own reward. Great questions with interesting answers. Maybe the horse was just cranky.
I love it when characters surprise us.
Nancy
Toinette, military brat - I've lived all over.
Sia, I ate all the candy - sorry! And thank you. Pleased you liked those characters and their relationships so well.
Nancy, I have another word for cranky...
Misha - Happy to be back and see everyone!
Stina - I couldn't help myself :)
Gary - Think of it as a double header :) Oh, you live in England, right? A double header is a baseball term for two games back to back.
Toinette - Thanks for stopping by. Great to meet you! And I'm glad you enjoyed the interview :)
Ah yes, I'm living in England. A double-header is often done in baseball to make up for a game that was postponed due to rain.
I went to plenty of baseball games in Vancouver, Canada :)
Yes, I get around. Maybe that didn't sound right....
Great interview, Carole!
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Have a super weekend.
Cathrina and Lexa - Happy you liked the interview.
Susan - Should be on a diet LOL :)
I love the name of your blog. It reminds me of the song "Thank God The Tiki Bar's Still Open" by John Hyatt. Great tune and great artist.
I also adore your tagline. It reminds me a little of my friend and cp Delynn Royer who also writes romantic mysteries (set in the 1920's)
Can't wait to hear more about you as we go! :)
So cool to see such a personal side to the Ninja Captain!
You really asked some fun questions...
Hope all is well....
Have a wonderful weekend....
Thanks Susan and Lexa!
Michael - You know how it is...inquiring minds want to know :)
Nancy - Thanks. I'll be around to your blog in a bit. I haven't made it to everyone yet.
Sheena-kay - Thank you, too. And I'll be at your blog in a bit, too. The candy just caught my eye - I don't even have a sweet tooth. Much rather have chips or pretzels.
Judith - Thanks. Pleasure to meet you, too.
Welcome back. I think I connect with you on all the links. Anyway will recheck just to be sure.
Congrats to Alex. Loved the interview and the book video.
Everyone - Happy you enjoyed this interview!
Pat, lived there for several years.
Thanks, Nas.
Thanks again, Carol!
