Friday's Top Ten

Today we have a Guest Top Tenner!

Please welcome Lynn Cahoon to the Tiki Hut. Since it's Friday, and since Lynn does such a great job of telling you about herself, I'm just gonna go to the patio and chill :)

Play nice!

Things that go bump in the night –

I have to admit, I love the paranormal. I started my monster reading with Grimm’s Fairy Tales (the non-Disney version). In high school I was introduced to Tolkien’s world and hobbits, elves, and dwarfs. As a young mother, I read Stephen King, leaning on stories where good trumps evil. Give me a good ghost story or haunted house, and I’m in heaven.

So, it probably didn’t surprise anyone when I started writing about a witch who didn’t know she had power and her imaginary childhood friend who turned out to be a fairy. I love the possibilities of what lies beneath our awareness. So, The Council series was born.

But, you’re here for a Friday top ten. And here we go – Famous Hauntings-in tale and song.

10. Chicago’s Resurrection Mary – the ghostly hitchhiker

  9. Laurie/Strange Things by Dickey Lee – sad, scary 60’s ballad about the girl at the dance.

  8. Supernatural – the television show – scary and hot guys. Great combo.

  7. Harry Potter – not scary but filled with witches and warlocks.

  6. The Craft – teenage angst combined with magic

  5. Practical Magic – who wouldn’t want these aunties?

  4. The Exorcist – Rumor has it that the actual exorcism happened here in St. Louis.

  3. The Amityville Horror - Loved the movie.

  2. Ghost Story – Peter Straub. I can’t even pick up that book without being scared.

And - My favorite ghost story? My own

I was dating someone who lived in a house where the prior owner had committed suicide. At work, I saw a person (thought it was one of the guys, trying to scare me) sitting on the coke machine. I went to yell at him, no one was there. When I slept over at the house, I saw a woman, sitting on the window seat. Again, no one when I turned my head.

I know I saw something. And that’s the part of the other world that bothers me the most. I know it’s out there.

And now, so does Parris in RETURN OF THE FAE.

A witch in training, a hunter on the prowl, and a world in jeopardy.

Learning the rules of being a witch takes years, but Parris McCall needs to master them in only weeks. Ty Wallace is going mad with his desire for Parris, but she’s a distraction in his quest to find Coven X before they take The Council and everyone he knows down.

The couple searches for Ty’s mentor, but he’s disappeared. Their only clue comes from a banished witch. When they return, not only are their own lives threatened, but a new life hangs in the balance.

The Exorcist was scary when it first came out. Freaky that it was a real exorcism there in St. Louis.
Congratulations on your book, Lynn!

Peter Straub's GHOST STORY scared the begeezus out me, too.

Congrats on your new book! :)

The Amityville Horror freaked me out as a kid. I'd read the book and just had to go see the movie when it came out. I saw Jodie the Pig's eyes out my window for months after that.

I also grew up re-reading Grimm's dark fairy tales. The harsh realities of the world in which they were set fascinated me. My favorite all-time scary movie is Halloween, but it's probably because of that eerie music! Mixing witches and fairies and a love story for adults, right? sounds like quite a trick. Fun! My first book, which went nowhere, was an MG about a witch coming of age and having to choose an apprenticeship that would turn into her forever job.

Ooh, I love the paranormal and ghost stories!! Your person ghost story is so intriguing and also chilling. I love this kind of stuff.
So great to meet you, Lynn. I will be checking out your book for sure.

Happy weekend, Carol! :)

Oooh!!! Still, though, the scariest thing I've ever seen was when I was very young, and it still bothers me to this day. It was the movie Jaws. Every time I hear that music, my skin crawls.

Supernatural is one of my favorite shows. I also really liked Ghost Whisperer when it was on. The paranormal is fascinating stuff (clearly) and people are interested, myself included. I do think that some places truly are haunted. Yeah, I think you saw a ghost (or two).

Hi Alex - I didn't know the St. Louis ties to the Exorcist until I moved here. The area is filled with great stories. A nice sorted past city for a ghost story addict like me.

Linda - I keep seeing that car go into the lake...

Thanks for the book love guys. :)
Lynn Cahoon said…
Diane - Oh, the pig thing... ugh. And we had a fly issue at our house this summer and all I could think about was the movie....

Kim - I think I don't like Halloween for two reasons. One -its a slasher flick and two - evil isn't destroyed, it's just delayed. Which is where most of the more recent movies are heading. I want a good wins story. :)

Hi Julie! Nice to meet you as well. The weird thing about my own story was the house where the suicide happened, we rented out to a young couple. The husband went to a local store, robbed the owners, and shot them in the store basement. I always wondered if he'd been 'influenced' by the house ghosts.

Shelly - Jaws is way creepy. I hate swimming in deep water, I have to just think 'little fishes...' LOL.
Lynn Cahoon said…
Robin, I loved the Ghost Whisperer too. And Medium, up until the last season when they were trying everything to stay on the air. :)

I was spooked big time by a Hindi movie Bhoot (which means Ghost). It was one of the nicest, scariest movies I have seen.
cleemckenzie said…
Spooky stuff here today. I feel Halloween creeping up on me.

Enjoyed the chills!
Lynn Cahoon said…
Hi Rachna - I haven't seen that movie. I'll put it on my list. Thanks!

Cleemckenzie - I feel the fall in the air here in St. Louis today too... Maybe that's why I went to the dark side. :) Thanks for stopping in.

I'm not scared by much, and I officially have goosebumps. *shivers*

Great top 10! :)
Vallypee said…
My sincere apologies, Lynn, but I just don't do paranormal at all. However, I enjoyed your post and your list! I will concede to liking Harry Potter though. Even then, after the first four books, I stopped reading. It got too dark for me..haha…I am either humour or history!
VR Barkowski said…
Movies and books based on true events are always scary to me, far scarier than fiction. That said, the movie version of the Shining made me want to hide all the knives. :)

Excellent top ten! The Exorcist is still the scariest movie in my books. Though I've tried, I've never had a supernatural experience. I'd like to (if that sounds crazy!). Congrats on the book!

I'm a huge horror fan, and I loved the supernatural things on your list! I thought the first line in the blurb was dynamite. Good luck, Lynn! :-)

Carol- thanks for having such a great top tenner. LOL

And Oh my the Ammityville horror I haven't heard of since I was a girl- I'd watched all of them.
Lynn Cahoon said…
Melissa - :) on the goosebumps. Thanks for stopping in.

Val - I love Harry and still find myself watching the movies time and time again, just because they are always on. Or at least that's what I tell my hubby.

FYI - Return of the Fae isn't spooky scary - you might enjoy it if you like the Hogwarts crew. :)
Lynn Cahoon said…
VR- Love the Shining. And the fact it's based on a real, haunted hotel, well, kind of, gives me the shivers. Did you ever see the made for TV mini series King did for The Shining? Excellent. And somehow, scarier.

Christine, Keep your eyes open, you might be surprised. :)
Lynn Cahoon said…
Lexa - thanks for your kind words on Return of the Fae.

Summer- Glad you had fun.

Hey gang, what about Poltergeist? #1 and the one set in the NY apartment. That one still gives me the creeps.

Isn't this a great top ten!

Just a few months ago I saw Practical Magic again on one of the classic movie channels. I love that movie.

I've seen The Amityville Horror and I've seen the Amityville house in person. It really does have those evil eye-like windows.

Also, I want to remind you that today's the last day of the Solomon's Compass giveaway at Goodreads. If you sign up, good luck!
The Amityville Horror book scared the crap outta me when I was a teenager! I don't think I slept well for months after I read it.

Maybe that's why I didn't freak out when I met a real ghost. He wasn't malevolent or anything, and he left when I told him to.

And the TV mini-series of The Shining that Stephen King did? I kept the bathroom light on at night for a week after I saw that one!
Lynn Cahoon said…
Carol - thanks for having me over! It's been fun. I'll keep checking in over the weekend.

Juli - wasn't that mini series amazing? I had a friend who staying in the hotel and met one of the ghosts. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Lynn. I believe you did see those two people. Strange things happen, indeed. A friend and I once walked into a little house that's part of a flea market, and we found out later we had both thought someone else was in there--someone who was angry because we walked in. But there was no one else in the house. The flea market owner said no one had lived in it. Something must have been attached to an object for sale in there.

Ooo I had one of those post-life encounters once, I think. Shivers. Great list!

Lynn,

I'm not excited about ghost movies, but your story sounds intriguing. Hope the book is doing well.

Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies and tho I never read the book, the movie Ghost Story was pretty good, too.

now i will have to add lynn's witchy story!

have a great weekend, ladies!
Welcome Lynn. Some of your picks I know and love and others I will hunt out.
And drat to both you and your host (skulking on the deck). I DO NOT NEED MORE TEMPTATION put in my way. I am weak willed.
Carol Kilgore said…
Tara - Witches of Eastwick! I loved that movie :)

EC - Does this make me a temptress :)

Everyone, thanks for stopping by. I think Lynn will be back around over the weekend.
You are nearly right. It makes you an EVIL temptress.

Hi, Carol, Hi, Lynn..

What fun.... Who doesn't like ghostly tales, witches, warlocks, elves, and MAGIC?!

As for ghosts, I'm 99 percent sure I have one living in my vintage apt/building. I believe it to be a boy because he plays pranks on me all the time by hiding things on me. Recently it's my passport. No kidding. When I call out to give it back in frustration TWO day later it will appear in a place I had checked at least fifteen times. Tomorrow the second day, so I hope my passport shows up. I need to renew and if I don't send it in with the application it will cost more and I'll have to send other ID to go along with it. Not fun.

It took me years to figure out that I wasn't just misplacing things... A spirit is certainly having fun with me. LOL.

"Give me a good ghost story..." I have just attempted one on "Trainride of The Enigmas", my first. Good? I am too primitive to know. Short though. Is that good? Enjoyed this post from a more experienced mind. My compliments!

Jan - Your flea market story gave me chills. I think we have lots of messages every day that we either hear or don't.

Julie - you should totally dish on your experience. :)
Lynn Cahoon said…
JL - When I started The Council series, I knew I wanted to write paranormal, but not vamps. I love how the witchcraft and other creatures are just part of Parris' new life. Kind of a witch out of water story.

mshatch - I love Practical Magic because it deals with every day stuff. Or what I think would be everyday if you were a witch. And I love the ending where they embrace their differences. (I'm using LOVE a lot in my chatting.)
Lynn Cahoon said…
Tara - Thanks for checking out The Council series, I hope you enjoy. I read the Witches of Eastwich and still enjoyed the movie.

Elephant - My motto - Lead me not into temptation, I can find it all on my own.
Lynn Cahoon said…
Michael, I hope you find your passport. Silly boy, messing with your stuff.

Geo - Good luck with your story. And yay on getting it out into the universe.
Lynn Cahoon said…
Mures - I had a lot of fun pulling the list together for Carol's blog.

Mason,
Thanks for the good wishes - There's just something about old houses that have character. My new series releasing next year all started because of a snapshot I took of an old, crumbling house.
Carol Kilgore said…
EC - Oooh, an EVIL temptress :)

Mason - Sunblock is a must!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

I still love ghost stories!

I'm convinced that a ghost ran its fingers through my hair once in Ireland. He/she obviously liked me :)

Hope you're enjoying the patio, Carol! And whoah -- a real ghost story? Holy cow, that had to be a trip.
Lynn Cahoon said…
LR - that's the start of a gothic novel right there.... :)

Hi Milo- You add all the weird things up, and there has to be an explanation. Thanks for stopping in.
I agree that your own personal ghost story was the strangest one of all. Great top ten list and congrats on your book Lynn!

Amityville Horror changed my life! I first read it in my teens and started looking over my shoulder on every little noise!

My daughter was forcing me to watch 'Conjuring' the other day, but I'm not ready yet!

Congratulations on your book, Lynn!

Thanks to Lynn Cahoon for a great top ten.

And thanks to all of you for stopping by and leaving comments.

I love the chills scary ghost stories give. I can't read or watch them alone at night though, lol.
