RaShelle, the Biergarten, and the Squirrel

NOTE: Forgot the title, but it's there now.

This is the final week of my blog tour for IN NAME ONLY. I'll be guesting elsewhere and blogging here Monday, Wednesday AND Friday. I'll try to make sense everywhere :)

Today I'm visiting with the beautiful and fantastic RaShelle Workman on her blog. RaShelle has been a blog friend for a long time, and I'm talking about a couple of different things. You'll need to go over there to find out what :)

I know. I'm mean. It's Monday.

But I'm not that mean. I have photos. A couple of weekends ago, Live-In Handyman and I went to the St. Louis Day Festival in Castroville, a small town about 15-20 minutes west of San Antonio. The town was settled in the mid-1800s by immigrants from Alsace-Lorraine, and many of their descendants live there today.

The festival was held in Koenig Park, and we had to park a few blocks away. On the walk, we passed these original houses and more that looked much like them.

At the park, we were greeted by men selling tickets for a bbq plate lunch.

I should have taken a photo of the plate, but I was too hungry to take the time. The plate had smoked brisket and sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, dill pickles, and bread. The food was yummy and piled high. I couldn't eat it all, but Live-In Handyman had no problem. The lunch also came with iced tea. It was $7 or $8, I don't remember.

There was more food, for those who wished to eat a la carte. Lots of games for kids and adults, raffles, and face painting. And of course, a biergarten!

There was also music. An oom-pa-pa band, a Texas swing band, and a rock band (that was on a break when we were in the area of their stage) so I didn't get a photo.

We left, tired, full, and singing "Roll Out the Barrel" and "Miles and Miles of Texas."

Did I mention it was hot? How hot was it? When we got home, we saw this on our patio.

The temp was 103F, and this little sweetie was trying to say cool on the shady concrete.

Even though it was hot, it seems like a lot of fun.

Looks like a fun day, in spite of the heat. Well, maybe not for the squirrel... ;)

What a fun day, Carol! I like street fairs and festivals.

Poor little squirrel. He's eyeing you as if to say, PLEASE don't make me move!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun! That pic of the squirrel is too funny (poor thing).

Aw, squirrel is adorable.

Festival sounds like a blast. I wanna go.

Sounds like a grand time. Those little homes look like many in the Fredericksburg area. (Did I tell you... I live in the Hill Country.)
Luanne G. Smith said…
Ha! That squirrel had a very good time. :))

Wow, great photos of a grand day out. I have to admire that you were too hungry to photograph the food. That would be me. ;) What a shot of that squirrel! Oh my.

Your lunch sounds delicious! And I love, love that picture of the squirrel.

Okay, that squirrel is ADORABLE! And BBQ? Now I'm hungry for brisket. :)

Heading over to RaShelle's...

Alex - The squirrel has been back several afternoons.

Clarissa - It was loads of fun!

Linda G - Even the dogs are not wanting to go out to chase the squirrel - mostly. I make enough noise at the door so he leaves first :)

Sia - I like them, tool. I let the squirrel stay until the dogs really have to go out.

Rula - At first I wondered if he was sick. He looks like he has a hangover, LOL!
Carol Kilgore said…
LR - Come on over...we'll go to the next one!

Bish - No, you didn't tell me you lived there! We're neighbors :)

L.G. - That's what it looks like!

Karen - Yes :)

CarrieBoo - And a fun time was had by all :)

Johanna - That squirrel makes me go 'awwww' :)

Emily - Texas brisket is always in season.

Oh! I can believe about the heat. From being a tropical country we have heat amid the cool breezes but the heat in the parts of US I visited is nothing compared to this!

Congrats on the release and all the best with the tour, Carol!

Lotsa pictures. The squirrel is so cute. Poor thing. Can't imagine how hot he must be.

Aww, that poor little squirrel! He looks so adorable, I hope he was able to cool off.

The pictures are awesome, looks like a really fun time. Congrats on all you've done for your blog tour, I'm so impressed!

Poor little squirrel! That BBQ plate sure sounds delicious!

Poor squirrel.

I love brisket -- wish I coulda had some, but not if it meant being out in that heat. We just broke a record here in Colorado too for our hottest summer ever, and it wasn't fun.

Congrats on your tour but especially for the release for In Name Only. I'm looking forward to it.

Nas - There's nearly always a breeze here along the coast, but not always inland like here. The breeze makes a huge difference.

J.L. - Pretty hot to make himself so vulnerable. And smart to know it was cooler there.

Julie - I'm so tired :)

Liza - I think the squirrel is OK. He's still around.

Helena - Thanks! Nothing better than good brisket. Hmmm. Make that 'Very little is better' - LOL!

That poor squirrel. I'm not sure I would have been outside in 103 degree weather. Ugh.

Poor squirrel. I hope he was hydrated.

You were great at Rashelle's blog.
Carol Kilgore said…
Ciara - "It's a dry heat." LOL!

Medeia - Thanks. I hope so, too. We don't keep water outside, but with as many squirrels and birds as we have around here, I'm sure they get water someplace nearby.
That poor little squirrel cracked me up! BBQ sounds super yummy, and loved that first little house.
The squirrel looks wiped out! LOL. Such a cutie too...

Sounds like a fun day. Music, food and drinks can't be bad, that poor squirrel looks uncomfortable.

Eeek, poor little squirrel! Looks scorching, but it also looks like a lot of fun. And the food! *drool*

Poor Squirrel! Sounds like you had a good time. I get to go to Little Balkan's Days this weekend; I think we're going to take the kiddo on a train ride!

Sounds like a great day but I would have been tempted to offer that poor little guy a cool drink.

Do they make acorn flavored popsicles?
Carol Kilgore said…
Shannon - The squirrel has been back. Makes the dogs a little crazy.

Lynda - I know the squirrel was hot. I didn't know they could figure out the concrete was cooler. Smarter than I thought.

Michelle - That squirrel lives high in a crape myrtle tree in my backdoor neighbor's yard. He's still squirreling around :)

Shelley - It was a great day!

Talli - Food was awesome :)

Lol at the poor squirrel!

Seems like you had fun in the park!

And Shells really is drop dead gorgeous, isn't she?

Southpaw said…
Poor little squirrel. :( And I'm not even a squirrel fan.
Carol Kilgore said…
Dezmond - Welcome to the Tiki Hut! And yes, she certainly is :)

Southpaw - Sweetie Squirrel is alive and well :)

Looks like you had a fab time.

Michelle - Thanks! Had a great time :)

I know Castroville well- my grandma lived there until she passed away a couple of years ago. She had a beautiful home right on the river, so I know Koenig Park well, too. What a lovely walk down memory lane- glad you all got to enjoy all things Alsatian, too~

The poor squirrel. He looks like he's been roasted on the floor.

Yum on the food!
Carol Kilgore said…
Shelly - Thanks for stopping by. I'm sure you loved visiting your grandmother :)

Stina - The poor squirrel was hot, but he's alive and well :)

From the pictures, that looks like a fun day. But 103 degrees is sooo hot. I'm a weakling in the heat. haha. I'd be the squirrel, sprawled out on the ground, unable to get up.
Glad your tour has been going so well! I'm heading over to RaShelle's! Julie
Carol Kilgore said…
Michael - It was hot, but not unbearable. There was plenty of shade and lots of large cooling fans.

Julie - I'm glad, too :)
LOL - That poor squirrel. Thanks for linking. Your post on my blog is fantastic. =)
Carol Kilgore said…
Thanks, Michelle. No squirrels were harmed in the taking of that photo :)
Carol Kilgore said…
Michelle. Where is my brain? I had it this morning, but it seems to have vanished. RaShelle. I meant RaShelle.

If I had a chance to go enjoy such a festival, I would have liked watching that squirrel most. ;)
Carol Kilgore said…
The squirrel was a bit like a museum painting...it didn't move. At least for a long time. He would lay there for hours some afternoons.
Johanna Garth said…
I just had breakfast and I STILL want to eat everything on the plate you described. Yum! Yum!
Carol Kilgore said…
That was such a fun day, Johanna. The food was delish :)
