Postcard from Texas

A couple of Saturdays ago, Live-In Handyman and I stopped for a burger.

Now a city the size of San Antonio has a lot of burger joints - almost as many places to get a burger as there are to get a taco. Almost.

But there aren't other burger spots like this one, just a mile or two past Rolling Oaks Mall going toward Garden Ridge:

The Bracken Store Cafe
Bracken, Texas
Outside, you're greeted by a friendly front porch that proudly proclaims the name of the place.

Inside, the Bracken Store Cafe is a tiny little place with booths around two walls, a few tables in the center, and a down-home funky decor. They have a sizable menu of lunch food, but I can only tell you about the burgers.

Best. Burgers. Ever.

And there's a Wurlitzer jukebox. While we were eating, I heard songs by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffett.

And guess what?

Even the train stops for lunch.

If you're in the neighborhood, you can stop, too.

We haven't been to San Antonio in a couple of years. Obviously, I'm overdue. :) I will remember this place.

Thanks!

I'm soooo jealous! Burgers just aren't the same over here. Sigh.

Funny, I was reminding my husband last night that a long time ago I had a business trip scheduled to San Antonio, until emergency surgery cancelled it. I'd always regretted not going. I'm always game for a great burger!

I love quirky hole-in-the-wall places with good food. If I get down that way I'll have to check it out.

We just don't have cool places like that in the UK! It looks awesome!

Wow, a jukebox? And the train stops too? I'd be smiling all through lunch. I love fun places like this :)

Now that is my kind of place! The jukebox alone would make my heart sing. Talk about atmosphere. :-)

I want one. I'm continually on a quest for a good burger, but the fact is I'm kind of sick of them. I'll spring for a fast food burger now and then when I see an enticing ad and then it's like "Yuck! What'd I do that for?"

I want to find a truly good ultimate burger, but Bracken is a bit far.

I`d love that jukebox! All my old heroes! And I think I would order a lemon meringue pie, do you think they have that? Burgers are always so messy to eat. And lemon meringue pies are just the best American food I can remember. And egg salad sandwiches.

How I love a good burger and where you go looks like a place filled with great atmosphere also. Would you believe the burger places where I live are disappearing and nowadays even at a burger place one is hard pressed to find a burger that doesn't take like "air".

Linda G - You'll like it.

Maria - Nacogdoches Road past 1604. First right after crossing Cibolo Creek and the railroad tracks.

Delores - And fun!

Totally my kind of place! Thanks for the tip - San Antonio is our first stop on the RV road trip. We will HAVE to go here!
Wow, it doesn't look that big from the outside!

Burgers? Did you say burgers? Oh, how wondrous a thing a good burger is. With any luck someday I'll get to visit this place and sink my teeth into one. They've gotta be good if a train stops for them!

Sound terrific. Until very recently, the town I live in had a place similar to that one called The Bean Pot. It closed it's doors just weeks ago.

All I can say is: 'Wow! I want to eat there!'

Hi, Carol - I saw you listed on Claudia's tagged list, so thought I'd pop over and see who my esteemed company are and what they are about.

I'm starting to think maybe my blog is too dark, after visiting several fellow tagees' blog sites? But then, I deal in the fantasy genre, and initially felt darker was better. Maybe time to rethink?

Well, lovely to 'meet' you - looking forward to reading more of your blog :)
