Open the Door

Last Monday I told you about my love affair with sandals. Sigh.

True confession - I also have a thing for doors. Doors fire my imagination right up. I wonder what's going on behind them when they're closed.

Open doors always look so inviting that I want to venture inside to see what's there.

Shuttered doors keep a double secret. Do they hide a beautiful door or a plain one? Are they hiding a treasure or a monstrosity?

Sometimes I wonder why the owners of some doors make them look this way. I have an image of the owner of this house.

I also like doors that call themselves gates because they're not all there. They keep us out, but let us see inside - "Nanny, nanny, boo, boo, you can't come in."

Doors represent opportunity - when opportunity knocks. And choices - "The Lady, or the Tiger?"

How about you? Do you like doors? Do doors fire up your imagination?

Maybe Jim Morrison had a thing for doors, too :)

Can you write a story or paragraph about one of these doors? Or use one in your WIP?

Happy Monday!

Tried to fix the wonky spacing. Failed. :(

I love doors too. I had a large gate in my backyard once, that didn't go to anything. My father intended on building a fence around it but it never happened. But the door remained in the middle of the yard. Wish I had taken a pic of it, it looked so cool.

And thanks for the idea about using a door in a scene. I think I may have just hit upon something.

Entry ways can certainly make or break a house. I like the images you selected; especially the gated ones.

As you might suspect, I do love doors. Thus my Fall Doorway series. Porches are great too :)

Awesome doors! I've always wanted an arched door like the first. But honestly every time... "I see a red door, I want to paint it black..." (Rollings Stones must've had a thing for doors too!!!)

Happy Monday.

I like colorful doors and funky door knockers. Have seen some nice ones in France, and Ireland too.

I do love doors, especially carved, solid wood, antique doors. They're amazing. You really got my imagination going!

Anne - How cool! I wish you had a photo of that gate, too.

Slamdunk - I love gates, too.

Joanne - I love both your door series and the porch series.

Linda K - I like the Rolling Stones, too, LOL!

LR - Same here :)

Rula - Very good. Now that your imagination is going, sit down and put it to work!

I have a passion for doors (okay, obsession). Along with pics, I collect door quotes, so I'll share my favorite. :)

A narrative is like a room on whose walls a number of false doors have been painted; while within the narrative, we have many apparent choices of exit, but when the author leads us to one particular door, we know it is the right one because it opens. —JOHN UPDIKE

Now and then I do find one that catches my attention. I wonder about the same things you do when I see a house I like - wonder who lives there, what the inside looks like and how it would feel to live there

VR - Great quote! Thanks for sharing it :)

Tracy Jo - I'll go check the link and my email in a bit. Thanks.

J.L. - Same. Must be the writer thing.

Elspeth - Of course!

Laura - It's an open and shut case :)

Doors leave a lot to the imagination. It would be interesting for everyone to write a story about one of the doors and see what kind of stuff each of us come up with. :)
I like being behind a closed bedroom door - does that count?
Laney said…
I guess I've never really looked at doors like that. But now I might just have to, and maybe get new inspiration for a new story. :) Great post.

When you look at doors, you can sort of imagine the people behind them. Some of those doors, I like. Some of them, not so much.

Does make me wonder what my front door says about me.

Did you ever read the Secret Garden? The hidden door to the secret garden is one of the most memorable doors I've ever read about.

Great post Carol!
Carol Kilgore said…
Ciara - Be the first! Anyone else is welcome to write their own story.

Alex - Alone?

Laney - Great! I think we never know what will inspire us until it does. Thanks for commenting :)

Helen - LOL...I wonder what people think of mine sometimes, too.

Lydia - No, I've never read Secret Garden. I'll check it out. Thanks!

Doors are interesting. I love finding hidden ones and I adore decorative ones found in older houses.

I do love doors! There are so many lovely entry-ways in London, I love just walking around the streets looking at it. I'll try to take some photos for you!

I love doors! Most doors in my neighbourhood look like the last one though. Oh well. Still I catch glimpses between the gate.
Carol Kilgore said…
Medeia - I like hidden ones, too :)

Talli - Door photos would be fantastic!

Clarissa - The last door is on an old farmhouse not too far from where I live.

I love doors. It's great fun deciding who lives behind them. I especially love the old wooden doors that you see in France and Spain. (Doors to my house are, of course, extremely dull. :))

I do love doors. The just set the tone don't they?

Isn't that funny? I sometimes take pictures of doorways too, just because they're interesting to me. I like colorful old world looking doors. Santa Fe is a great city for door-watching.

I love your door post and all the comments! Inviting doors are the best.
Carol Kilgore said…
Shirley - Next time I go to the missions, I'm taking door shots.

Holly - They do set the tone.

L.G. - Totally agree about Santa Fe!

Angela - I love when doors invite me in :)

Oh my, yes. I love doors and gates - especially ones covered with bushes, or flowers and such. :)

*high fives* Something else we have in common. I love gates and doors - am always taking pictures of doorknobs in Europe - seriously. ;-)

I love doors. Someday I want to do a photo essay on them! Beautiful.
Carol Kilgore said…
Michelle - Doors seem to touch a place in everyone's heart.

Talei - Oh, I'd love to have my pick of doorknobs. Most here are basically the same - and not many are outstanding.

Liza - I'm sure your photos will be much better than mine are here. And I'm wanting a better camera, but maybe next year.

Doors invite mystery. Of course doors would intrigue a mystery writing scorpio. You don't have to huff and puff and blow the house down to open most doors.
Door are fascinating. A few years ago I saw a calendar with doors at the book store. It was very inviting, but I bought a different calendar instead. I can't remember what the one I bought was about, but I sure remember the one with the doors. Go figure!

Manzanita - Just the doors to bank vaults and safe rooms :)

Donna - Talei blogged about something similar happening with books. Why do we do things like that - LOL!

Hey Carol! LOVE the sandals. Very pretty.

I'm a big door fan as well. I like the idea that you can go in or out, see something fresh or leave something no longer desirable. Love the symbolism.

Also, my other favorites are bridges. Any kind of bridge. Makes me feel like I can rise above anything. :)

Carol Kilgore said…
I like bridges, too. But I have more photos of doors :)
Doors are symbolic, aren't they? And sometimes the locks and mechanisms on the doors add more beauty and mystery.
Carol Kilgore said…
Cynthia - I agree. Sadly, tho, I rarely find a door with more than plain hardware. Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong doors.
