Friday's Top Ten

The top ten things said to writers:

10. Are you finished yet?

  9. You must be rich.

  8. Where do you get your ideas?

  7. If I ever have any spare time, I'm going to write a book.

  6. What do you do all day?

  5. I have a great story for you.

  4. Do you work at Barnes and Noble?

  3. It's nice you have something to keep you busy.

  2. Have I read your books?

And the #1 thing said to writers:

  1. Since you don't work . . . .

I was hoping "I have a great story for you" wouldn't be on there, cause I wanted to say that. I've heard that recently.

But let's add. "You write it, and since it was my idea, we'll split all the many profits!"
Summer Ross saidā€¦
LOL- I have heard some of those a few times.
Linda Kage saidā€¦
Too true, too true.
Rula Sinara saidā€¦
Great list, and so true! I get #7, #6, and #5 A LOT. I also get "Romance, huh?"...with a big smirk on their face. Argh.
Joanne saidā€¦
Hahaha. I thought the Spare Time one was funny, but then each one afterward was even funnier!

Happy Friday Carol :)
Carol Kilgore saidā€¦
Shirley - Oh yeah, those are definitely the words that follow.

Summer - I'm not surprised.

Linda - I know. Sad.

Talli - It's a global phenomenon.

Rula - That romance thing is definitely there, but almost any type of genre gets it, too.

Joanne - Made you smile!
Manzanita saidā€¦
I got a big chuckle out your list, especially the "what do you do all day?" I'm not a writer but I always get that one, too. Me, the list maker with never a spare moment. Ha

Yeah, love hearing #7...
VR Barkowski saidā€¦
These make we want to laugh and cry at the same time. Fantastic list, Carol.

Have a great weekend!

I thought I'd had them all but, so far, no one has asked me #4. People who utter #1 get put in one of my books with a hole in their head. Just sayin' :)
Laura Eno saidā€¦
Ack! How true...
I just got one this morning - an email from an old friend. He wants me to contact a friend of his who just wrote a novel and tell him how to get published because he has no idea... Snap! Sure, let me give you the golden secret, no research involved.
Carol Kilgore saidā€¦
Manzanita - Sometimes even my lists have lists. Never enough time.

Alex - Exactly. Like 'how hard could it be'.

VR - Same here.

Shirley - Only one person has asked me that one. I hear you about #1.

Laura - LOL! Non-writers don't have a clue.
Colette Martin saidā€¦
Laughing, yes, I've heard many of these. And the one I hear from my mother -- You can write while you're visiting me. (Of course, I can't.)
Unknown saidā€¦
Grrr. Those lines drive me insane! Yes, and I've heard them all.
LR saidā€¦
Oh yes. Number 8 is especially annoying. I mean, where don't we get ideas? Ideas are everywhere. :)
Arlee Bird saidā€¦
Uh yeah. I'd like to be able to smile smugly and say nothing about #9 because it was true. I wish.

Hope you'll join us for The A to Z Challenge Reflections Post on Monday May 2nd.

Miss Good on Paper saidā€¦
This really made me laugh out loud. Since I took part in NaNoWriMo last November, the question I get all the time is "How's that novel coming along?" Glad I'm the only one who hears these kinds of statements. Thanks! -Miss GOP
Julie Flanders saidā€¦
I love this list, great post! :)
Carol Kilgore saidā€¦
Colette - I've tried that writing while visiting thing.

Clarissa - Same here.

LR - I know. I isn't as if we go looking or leave out cookies for them so they'll come.

Arlee - Don't we all.

Miss Good on Paper - We all hear them, usually way more than we would like.

Julie - Thanks.
notesfromnadir saidā€¦
I get #6 a lot. That's often followed by #5. People want me to write their story & then they'll share the proceeds w/ me.
These all sound really familiar!

Now this is funny. Sad, but true. I hear these and am not sure how to reply. Hopefully one day I will be rich!
Southpaw saidā€¦
I like #2. It expects you to be a mind-reader.
Tracy Jo saidā€¦
Lol! Love it. I recently quit my "corporate" job to write and work on my photography. I got a lot of pretty good questions too. Found you through an A-Z blog.

Lisa - At times it seems to be never-ending.

Elizabeth - Here, too.

Stephen - Right - funny and sad at the same time. There's no right answer.

Holly - Exactly.

Tracy Jo - Go for it and don't give up. I'm glad you stopped by. You're welcome here any time.
Mason Canyon saidā€¦
Great list, but I thought all writers had servants to do their work for them while they lounge by the pool. :)

Have a great weekend.

I've heard a few of these.

I wish #9 were true. :)
Maryannwrites saidā€¦
I've heard some of these from family and friends. Another one that I dread getting is, "Would you mind taking a look at the first few chapters of my book?"
Carol Kilgore saidā€¦
Mason - Of course we do. Errr...what pool?

Medeia - If only. Sigh.

Maryann - Yes, that one, too.
RaShelle Workman saidā€¦
ROFL - Thanks Carol. Very funny. Loved this top 10 so much. =D
The Words Crafter saidā€¦
Are you published yet?

This list made me laugh out loud, thanks! I really needed it :)
Carol Kilgore saidā€¦
RaShelle - Thanks - glad you enjoyed the list.

Words Crafter - Cool!
I'm published in fiction and non-fiction, both in the short form only. I'm working hard to be able to say I'm a published novelist very soon.
You can visit my website and click the links to some of my work:

hmmm...that didn't work.

I'm trying again here, but if this doesn't work either, you can copy and paste from the last line.

LOL! I can totally relate to most of these. Especially that last one... I hear that ALL the time and even more so from my husband. What the heck is up with that????

Thanks for making me laugh today (or maybe that is cry....) ;-)
