Words, Words, and More Words

Words I like the sound of:
slather
kerfuffle
hullabaloo

Words I hate the sound of:
nauseated
gelid
ointment

Words that make me smile:
funky
wonky
giggle

What words do you have that fit these categories?

And remember ... Thursday is National Tortilla Chip Day!

Ahhh, so true -- the sound of the words can make you feel differently. And all of them sound better with a British accent.

I love YOUR list. Can't think of any at the moment, which I'm afraid means I'm not very creative or, worse, getting too old to remember!!

Have a great Wednesday!!!

Colette - Yes! Why is that?

Ann - Never too old :)

LR - Great words! Thanks for contributing.

SLURP kind of makes me want to gag for some reason. Dunno why.

GARGANTUAN makes me smile though.
Linda Kage said…
Oh, but a gargantuam slurpy just makes me really hungry.

Fun lists going on here. Words that make me smile? Hm ... coffee! And writing, too! Maybe with a little chocolate thrown in the mix. Not so much for their sounds, but for what they mean to me.
Laura Eno said…
How fun!
I like salacious and slinky and agree with LR - olfactory is just wrong.

I've never heard kerfuffle. What does it mean? I rather like the word kazoo. Can't play one, but it's still fun to say.

Well, you caught me off guard and I am wordless. Like Joanne, I do like the word chocolate. Words I don't like are sophisticated words that I have to look up the meaning to. Words that make me smile are splish, splash, giggled, swoosh, etc. Can you tell I write for children :o)

I love words too! 'Moist' and 'slimy' are my least favorite, but I use gelid often when I write. It seems to fit when 'cold just isn't ugly enough. For some reason I love the word 'whisper.'
Elspeth Futcher said…
I adore 'akimbo'. 'Snot' is disgusting in almost an onomatepoeic way. 'Frumpy' is charming. 'Snicker-snack' should be used more.
Carol Kilgore said…
Linda - LOL! Gargantuan Slurpy!! And it's lunchtime, too :)

Joanne - I like the sound of chocolate - all those O's.

Laura - And I agree with you!

Helen - From World English Dictionary:

kerfuffle , carfuffle or kurfuffle (kəˈfʌf ə l)

— n
1. informal chiefly ( Brit ) commotion; disorder; agitation

— vb
2. ( Scot ) ( tr ) to put into disorder or disarray; ruffle or disarrange

Janet - Another chocolate fan! A sophisticated word every once in a while, but not an entire book filled with them. I like your smile words, too.

Thanks for commenting and following.

VR - I love whisper, too, because it sounds like what it is .

Elspeth - Snot. She said snot. Snort.

Like: coniferous, holiday
Hate: dived ;)
Smile: turtle, piffle

I should make a list because I often hate words I hear. Next time I'm going to have to write them down.
I'll just have to celebrate with some chips and salsa tomorrow! And for some reason the word NetFlix makes me smile...
Carol Kilgore said…
Holly - Me, too! Except for dived.

Clarissa - That'll work :)

Alex - You made me laugh. Did you see UNKNOWN?

There are many German words which I like to say: schmunzeln (qietly smile), kichern (giggle), schmatzen (eat noisily), betüteln
(can`t translate, something like "trying-to-be-of-help-even-if-you-don`t-need-it", kinda), Scherzkeks (silly guy), oh, too many. I like words that have a sound to them.

Ha! Nice list.

I love the word "oblique" but hardly ever get to use it. ;)
Claudia Zurc said…
Words I like: serendipity, woo, mischievous ;)

Words I don't like the sound of: oh boy, there's quite a few.
Lydia Kang said…
Oh! Claudia too my word. Serendipitous.

I don't like the word receive. The e-i i-e thing drives me nuts.
Carol Kilgore said…
Angela - Schmatzen sounds like noisy eating! And the same with scherzkeks for silly guy. Thanks!

lbdiamond - I like the sound of oblique, too. I don't think I've ever used it in a story. Maybe I'll look into that :)

Claudia - That's a good one!

Lydia - Spelling ... what would we do without spell checker.

Doggone I went to the store yesterday and bought Sun Chips--I don't think they qualify for torilla chips, but they'll have to do cause I'm not going back to the store.

Persnickety is a funny word.

LOL! Great lists I'm embarrassed to say that I find words like 'bollocks' have a good ring to them. I find words like 'such' rather puzzling and words like vomit and stench maybe would be horrible words. :O)
Carol Kilgore said…
Arlee - I love Sun Chips. And who would be persnickety enough not to allow them :)

Madeleine - Great choices!

my favorite sounding word: cacophony (though I love kerfuffle, too). Least favorite? any long chemical name. And I am fairly delighted with any onomotopeia words... They usually make me smile.
The Happy Whisk said…
I love, love, love, wonky.
Carol Kilgore said…
Hart - I like cacophony, too. Falls in the same category for me as whisper.

Happy Whisk - :)
