The One About How I Write

After last week's frenzied activity, I'm happy to settle back into what passes for my normal schedule.

I promise not to fuss at the dogs on their third outside trip in well under an hour because the squirrels are playing and the neighbor dogs are having all the fun.

NOTE: Each trip outside for them means a minimum of three trips to the door for me because Dog Rule #37b clearly states that under no condition - unless deemed an emergency by the canines - shall both dogs return inside on the same door opening by the human. Dog Rule #37c further states that it doesn't matter how many times either canine returns inside while the other canine remains outside, it is counted as one outing until both canines have returned and remained indoors for a minimum of one minute.

Nor will I freak when the doorbell rings . . . and I realize I'm still not dressed.

NOTE: It's because I've been too busy letting the dogs in and out, and for no other reason whatsoever.

I could go on. I've learned to work with these situations and others, but writing in the zone doesn't happen often because of constant interruptions for something that someone other than myself believes must be done NOW!

I'm so looking forward to seeing my characters again, getting re-involved in their lives. Even if it's only between trips to the back door. And rushing upstairs to throw my clothes on.

Maybe next year my resolution will be to dress before coming downstairs.

But where's the excitement in that :)

This is my life. And I love it.

Those of you participating in NaNoWriMo will experience this feeling of returning to your regularly scheduled programming in a few days.

And on Wednesday, it's the first annual Under the Tiki Hut NaNo After Party.

Right here . . . don't miss it!

Hm, maybe you can use those trips to the back door to ruminate on a plot point? That's the beauty of writing, we're always "writing" somehow, even if it doesn't look it. Happy Monday :)

hmmm...sure those dogs aren't cats?
glad you'll be joining us in so-called normalcy soon. I nixed my nano but got what I needed from it. Hey! How about nix-namo - the new party game everyone is mad about!???

My pup will not go outside alone. If he finds himself outdoors on his own, he will plant his behind by the nearest door and bark until a human joins him. Inconvenient to say the least.

Explain normal again. Think I've forgotten...

I can't wait for normal to be back again, so I can focus on writing. Promotion is fun and all, but I'm ready to return to the page.

Enjoy your party - what a great idea!

I knew there was a good reason ours were outside dogs. Then again, that was Florida.

No pets, no kids--alone at home most days I should have no excuses not to write, but I can certainly find them.

Normal schedule? What's that?

I like the dog rules – however did you find their secret handbook?

Normal schedule, now what is that? Just think though, without all the unusual sidetracks from a normal routine, life could get boring. :)

Joanne - Yes, some of it stays in my head to and fro. But I have to regroup each time I return.

Jan - Nix NaNo...I love it!

VR - I'm laughing, but one of our dogs is somewhat like that. Our backdoor has a solid glass pane. When Woof goes out, he turns to make sure I'm still standing there then goes on. So I can't leave until after that ritual, which sometimes lasts several seconds. Is there really a normal?

Talli - Your websplash will be awesome - and part of the NaNo party, too :)

Terry - We've only had an outside dog once. All the others have been house babies.

Lee - Must be nice :)
Carol Kilgore said…
Holly - I can't tell you. They swore me to secrecy....

Mason - That's true. It is NEVER boring around here.
You and Jan have got me laughing today! I too was thinking your dogs sounded too Machiavellian...that they might be cats in disguise!

Looking forward to your after-party. :) Even though I didn't NaNo!
Carol, I had to laugh at your post because I just had one of those doorbell ringing moments while I was still in my pjs. It was our mailman with the mail they’d been holding for the previous week. I opened the door like it was no big deal, but I was mortified.

Oh I KNOW that situation. If I don`t get dressed right away but get the newspaper first, and have coffee, and read the paper, and JUST throw a look at my computer - then suddenly Paco is starting to bark and feels NEGLECTED - and me still in my bathrobe... Never mind and keep on writing!
oh Party hunh? I love parties and that whole pyjama thing, serve whoever comes knocking at my door right.

Ah yes, the return to our regularly scheduled programming...except wait. It's December. Crap. How many shopping days are left? How much baking do I have to do? Plus tree-buying and decorating? And present wrapping? Crap again.

Oh...and write too.

Looking forward to Wednesday's party!

Elizabeth - Maybe the dogs are cats in disguise. I should look for a zipper. I didn't do NaNo either - I'm just a cheerleader :)

Jane - LOL. Needless to say, I can relate only too well.

Angela - Yep, that about covers it!

Joanna - Yes, party time at the Tiki Hut!
Carol Kilgore said…
Elspeth - Unfortunately, yes. The Dreaded December. I am going to try to be much better organized this year. Pray for me.

So much for a normal schedule. There are just so many things to do! And the interruptions, like ringing doorbells. :P

Did you say . . . party?
Colette Martin said…
Carol, happy to hear things are calmer for you this week.

So, can we come to the party even if we didn't finish a book? Who ever decided book writing month should be November, anyway?
Carol Kilgore said…
Golden Eagle - ...and at the most inopportune moments, too!

Colette - Yes, party at the Tiki Hut. Everyone is invited. Just because we didn't participate in NaNo doesn't mean we can't celebrate it and those who die participate. The more the merrier!

I can't wait to get back into writing. THe holiday makes everything different, in a good way, but not good for writing!
Exactly why I do not have dogs.
Carol Kilgore said…
Alex - I think so!

Lydia - Same here.

Karen - Smart woman. But you miss a lot, too. It's a trade off. I can say that one dog is basically no problem. Two...more than twice the problems and fun.

I'd still like a dog. :)

I dislike constant interruptions that pull me out of my writing. I tend to write late at night and early in the morning to avoid them.

I wish I could follow your rule. I do get dressed before coming down, but then I start in on the computer and hours later, my eyes are tired because I haven't put in my contacts (or mascara or moisturizer, etc.) Sometimes I wait so long, it's not worth doing it.

Looking forward to the after party ... I'll bring left over Thanksgiving turkey and cheese taquitos with guacamole and bean dip!
G. J. Jolly said…
I'm like you. I don't get dressed right away. I used to when I worked at the hospital but that was during my cooperate years. As for doorbells ringing and phones ringing, I think I'll always jump out of my skin for those.
Carol Kilgore said…
Medeia - I love to write late at night, but when I do I can't turn off. I'm not a morning person, but sometimes when I do awake in the dark, I write. It's awesome.

Helen - We writers are quite a bunch, aren't we!

Stephen - I appoint you Official Chef!

Glynis - I'd like to be able to ignore the phone...and sometimes I do :)

Maybe if I buy myself some nice clothes and dress up for my work (writing) I'll take it more serious.

Clarissa - But shorts and tees are so comfy. Or jeans. Or sweats.
Hart Johnson said…
Now you KNOW you won't write NEARLY as well if you get dressed first. Take it from me. Clothing and writing are incompatible.

Those dogs on the other hand, seem like they need to be synchronized! teehee

(glad you're getting the routine back in order!)
Carol Kilgore said…
Hart - Maybe I should tie a little alarm onto their collars and teach them to come to the door only when it goes off. If my desk wasn't in front of a large window on the front of the house, I might never get dressed!
Sheila Deeth said…
I love those dog rules! Welcome back to December.

Haha! This sounds like a bit of chaos that I would not handle with such aplomb. ;-) Hope the schedule settles down and the dogs become more contented with a simultaneous adventure to the great outdoors soon.
Carol Kilgore said…
It becomes routine after a while. But on the days they go for baths, it's heaven here :)
