Words and Music by . . .

You know how your mind leaps from one word to the next to connect things? I can't be the only one. I'm sitting here listening to the mockingbird outside the window. He's singing up a storm. And I'm thinking, "Now there's some real Texas music."

My mind goes Texas Music! Blog about Texas Music. I'm like, "I can't blog about Texas Music - I'd be stepping on toes and violating copyrights all over the place."

Then the next idea popped into my head. I know how I can do this.

But...Under the Tiki Hut is a writer's blog for readers and writers, not a music blog. While most of us probably do like music, it's a safe bet that our tastes span the spectrum.

So I decided to blog about Texas writers.

There are a lot of us!

So I decided to blog about well-known Texas writers.

Still a lot!

Well-known Texas novelists. Huh? Google gave me the two-headed look. C'mon Google! Maybe we didn't create Harry or Bella or Peeta, but a few Texas novelists may be a little upset to learn their names aren't on such a list.

Worse for me, I still don't have a blog topic.

But that mockingbird is still singing and keeping me happy. Maybe that's all I need on a fine Monday morning.

Looks like you came up with one anyway! :)

Have you heard of The Austin Lounge Lizards? Great group. One of my favorite songs of theirs is called "One More Stupid Song about Texas." Makes me laugh every time.

A mockingbird picture makes for a positive start to the week ;). I saw The Hunger Games on Friday so your pic made me think of the mockingjay.

Love the bird and the brilliant blue sky! A great Monday outlook for the week ahead.

LOL! Sounds good to me. Gotta love those Mockingbirds. ;)

Oh yeah, you're alive and in tune with nature. Everything else will fall into place.
Well, your mind could've wandered in worse directions!
I know a Texas writer if you need one - Helen Ginger!

I can relate to the challenge of planning blog posts Carol.

A Texan who has name recognition in military writer circles, but his talents have been mostly forgotten is author John Thomason (he died in 1944). His collection of pre WWII Marine Corps stories in which he also includes his own sketches, is a worthy read.

I think Google is demanding you make that list so it can therefore publish it! But yeah, don't ask me who any Kansas novelist are? All i can think of is Julie Garwood!

I'm so glad it's spring I don't even mind that the chirping starts so early. :)

happy Monday

I'm thinking it would be cool to post about guitar playin', bird watchin', writers from Texas. There's got to be some. Do you play the guitar? ;)

Have I told you how much I love the picture on your blog header? I feel like I'm sitting in one of those chairs looking out over the ocean.
Carol Kilgore said…
Mason - The place in the header is very relaxing :)

Delores - Mockingbirds are everywhere you turn here.

Joanne - Would that be a Chocolate Chirp?

Anna - I'm happy you think so :)

Liza - Good thing since it's all I had!
I can just feel the springtime Texas love in this post!
Carol Kilgore said…
Linda G - I have! It is a funny song. There's one about fighting when they drink gin, too.

Rula - There ya go!

Talli - We have lots of blue skies here :)

Tami - Yep, gotta love them or they'll make you crazy :)

J.L. - Let's hope so!

Texas is a big state. Maybe you could blog about novelists in your county? I bet there are already a lot right there!
Would love to know about Texas novelists!

Happy Monday!

Beautiful spring weather, flowering bushes and trees, and chirping birds....that is all I need to be very happy! Oh...and my pal, Vern, at my side, too! :)
Carol Kilgore said…
Alex - I know Helen! And many more. Didn't want to list everyone I know - way too easy to leave people off by accident.

Slamdunk - I'm not familiar with him, but I'll check him out. Thanks!

Karen - I need blog topics - always :)

Linda K - I didn't know she was from Kansas!

LR - I'm loving spring, too. In the summer, mockingbirds sometimes sing at night.
Jeremy Bates said…
Ah, the state bird! Have you ever driven down Mockingbird Rd (see, my mind jumps too) in Dallas? That rascal of a mainly antiquated drive is long!

Um, how about Larry McMurtry for a famous writer in Texas? He was born near Wichita Falls if my memory serves me correctly.
Carol Kilgore said…
Elspeth - I'll see if I can round one up for you :)

Jennifer - I did!

Emily - I do know of a few who live here, but don't know if they are from here or if they've lived here long.

Yvonne - Thanks :)

Margo - You have a great week, too!

Wow. What a wonderful start to the week. Love the picture and that gorgeous blue sky. Amazingly, our sky is that same blue today.
Your uplifging post put me in an immediate good mood. Your enthusiasm is congatious; the weather in Missouri is gorgeous today. The birds are chirping, my lilac bush is in full bloom.
Happy Spring!

Michelle - I learned guitar basics a long time ago, but I didn't love it enough to stick with it. Had to cut my nails, the strings hurt my fingers, and I could live without it. I play piano, but not well.

Colette - Thanks :) I remember doing just that every time I look at it, too.

Karen - Wonderful :)

Lydia - Good idea - a couple of famous ones here or nearby, I think.

Romance Book Haven - Maybe I'll get it together enough in a week or so.

That was quite enjoyable.

Becky - I saw Vern's photo on your blog. Happy, happy doggie!

Jeremy - I have been on Mockingbird in Dallas, but I haven't been to Dallas in a long time. I didn't know where Larry McMurtry was from - thanks. He lives out around Alpine or Marfa now, I think.

Shirley - I love blue sky, too. Today ours is white. And may be wet in a bit.

Donna - Enjoy!

Can't wait to see what you have in store for us. I would love to learn more about Texas writers.
Sounds like a magnificent spring morning with the beautiful bird making music. Great posting about Texas music and its writers.

I'm also thinking about how I want to write one of my blogs from now own.

Good luck with finding a good topic. :-)
Carol Kilgore said…
Tracy Jo - Yea!

Brenda - Glad you enjoyed this.

Misha - I was only looking for a topic for one day. I'm pretty loose about topics, if you couldn't tell :)

I love this - it is how my mind works. Is Larry McMurtry a Texan writer? He sure writes about Texas a fair bit. I'm mad for him. Just plain mad for him. In fact I'm going to go write him an email telling him so.
Carol Kilgore said…
Jan - I knew Larry McMurtry lived in West Texas, but Jeremy Bates pointed out he was also born in North Texas in Wichita Falls. I wish I had a smidgen of his talent. My surprise came when I was unable to find a comprehensive list of Texas novelists.
Carol Kilgore said…
Clarissa - This Texas Writers thingie is proving to be somewhat of a challenge. But a good challenge can be fun, right?
