I've never had Texas food and seeing your list makes me jealous, very jealous.

I'm with Hannah, most of these I've never had! They sound delish, though. Happy Friday to you ...

I've had the pleasure of most of these, although being from a Polish/Czech household, I assume the Kolaches I've enjoyed might not be exactly the same as TX version. The item that fascinates me is the Frito Pie. Never heard of it. Is it similar to nachos only with Fritos? I must go look up a recipe!

I love food lists... :) Happy weekend!

I'm very hungry now...
I haven't heard of frito pie or Kolaches, but they sound good anyway!

Great list. I'd have to say #4 would be my #1. I had to laugh when I saw chili as #1. I have a friend that lives in Texas and when she first moved here (some 30 years ago now) she couldn't get Van Camps chili so I would ship her cases of chili from Georgia. LOL

Hannah - Come visit!

Joanne - They are delish :)

VR - You might be surprised. Many of the early immigrants to Texas came from Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, so there's a lot of that culture here. I prefer the fruit ones. Or the poppy seed ones.

Laura - Frito Pie...Fritos, chili, onions, cheese. Unhealthy and yummy, all in one bite!

Mason - I love good brisket, too. Your friend has probably learned to make her own chili. Or uses Wolf Brand.

Texas is one of the most boring states to drive through but boy, do they have great BBQ... and the portions? Out of this world!

I love chili!

Oh, yum. You're making me want to come visit Texas.

Here is Southeast Kansas, we're known for our fried chicken, there was even an episode on the tv show Food Wars about our chicken.

A Texan moved up here and couldn't find BBQ the way she liked it, so she opened her own little BBQ place. Yummy.

I'm still discovering what Colorado food is. A lot of Mexican influence, and a lot of bison.

Dang it, Carol, now I'm hungry. Except for the Jalapenos. But a frito pie or King Ranch Chicken...hmm hmm.

Clarissa - It's like you'll never escape from Texas it's so huge. And parts are flat or desert or traffic-clogged. The Hill Country is beautiful. And parts of the coast. Maybe that's why our food is good :)

Linda - Come visit! I love good fried chicken. Showing vs. telling, LOL.

Terry - Good for her! Now people know what she meant.

Helen - Lunch is just around the corner.

I'm not from Texas but I can agree...I love chili!
Kolaches? Okay, gotta google that one...
Arlee Bird said…
I've seen those kolaches advertised on billboards along I-10 between Houston and San Antonio, but I've never tried one. Maybe next trip I'll need to check them out.
I always get some of those red-coloered sugary peanut patties. Texas is the only place I've seen them. I was thinking they are called "Pecos Patties" but I'm not real sure. If I see them whenever I stop for gas, I usually pick one up.

You had me until the cornbread without sugar. I can tell you've never hung around with a hillbilly in your lifetime. Sugar is the only way to go. LOL

Just saw a recipe for lentil chili. Not sure how that would taste. Needs the beef and pork to be real Texas chili.
Talli Roland said…
I love tex-mex too. But I've always wondered, what exactly is chicken fried steak? I just don't get it...
Carol Kilgore said…
Lydia - Kolaches are yummy fruit-filled pastry :)

Arlee - Yes, check them out. The fruit ones. Live-In Handyman loves those peanut patties. Me? Not so much.

Maryann - I'm a Native Texan and I never ate cornbread with sugar until I was grown and lived in Virginia. You must live in East Texas :)

Talli - Chicken fried steak is a beef cutlet cooked almost like a schnitzel and served with white gravy.

Now I'm google some recipes because this post made me hungry! Great fun once again, Carol.
Cornbread with no sugar?

all so yummy- you made me hungry- and I'll admit chili is one of my favorite things about winter! Have a wonderful weekend!
Yum. I used to live in Dallas and in Rockwall. Now you have me craving a chicken fried steak. I haven't had one in years.
Carol Kilgore said…
Elspeth - Thanks. Enjoy anything you make.

Alex - You bet. It has a little salt, but isn't salty or sweet.

Holly - Very yum :)

Summer - Dinner's coming :)

Jane - Hope you find one in your area...or you might have to cook!
Dang, I'm hungry now! Have a great, chili-fueled weekend!
I've been craving chili for several days. I'm going to HAVE to make it now. Of course, it'll have to be served with a side of cornbread. =D

I thought all cornbread came without sugar!

Tex-Mex -- nothing like the real deal!
Carol Kilgore said…
Words Crafter - Thanks. I hope you have a great weekend, too.

RaShelle - Enjoy your chili!

notesfromnadir - Not in the southeast. Love Tex-Mex.

I haven't had many of these, especially since I'm a vegetarian. But I do love cornbread.
Carol Kilgore said…
Some veggies here, Medeia: cornbread, kolaches, jalapenos, and some Tex-Mex.
Carol Kilgore said…
Oops, I'm still on my first cup of coffee, and that comment doesn't quite make sense. Kolaches aren't quite a veggie, but they don't contain meat. More caffeine, please :)

It all tastes delicious. Shrimp's my favorite!

I love them, too. Especially fresh off the boat.

Those all sound wonderful. When I was last in Texas I was too young to enjoy all those foods and am thinking I missed out. Also gives me encouragement to get experimenting in the kitchen, too. Maybe some of that spice will warm the family from the inside. :)
Carol Kilgore said…
LOL! Yes, it will warm you from the inside out, for sure. If something is too spicy, eat bread or a flour tortilla or drink milk to dissipate the heat. Works better than water, tea, or beer.

I should send the list to my Texas son. I remember the BBQ brisket from our visit--incredible!!!
Carol Kilgore said…
He'll tell you it's true. Good brisket is melt-in-your-mouth yummy.
