I think you hit it pretty close, except the beach probably should be higher-- definitely higher than Branson. And I'd put Great Smokies and Gatlinburg or Yosemite above Yellowstone according to National Park Service statistics, but Yellowstone is certainly glorious and I'd gladly go there. My top picks are visit my mother or my kids or stay home-- ah, home sweet, peaceful home.

I love your top tens. I may copy you!
(And if you get to D.C., look me and Jen up!)

I think a family cruise would be more fun if the family stayed at home! (You know - adults only.)

Arlee - Ooh, I should've put Gatlinburg instead of Branson. Darn. Why didn't I think of that?

Ann - Will do. Haven't been there in a while.

Alex - Me, too :)

A vacation where you actually get to leave all your worries behind? I thought that was just a myth.
Carol Kilgore said…
Patti - My favorite vacation isn't on this list, and it doesn't include kids or extended family.

Shirley - It's been my experience that I don't realize I'm actually on vacation until about day 3 or 4.

When I was growing up, our family vacations always consisted of visiting relatives somewhere boring. No wonder I enjoy traveling on my own. :)

One of out very best family vacations was a short one at the beach in Galveston. We only had a couple of days, with another day in Houston to visit NASA, but it is still memorable these many years later. Playing together really cements the family relationships.

I actullay really loved Disneyland! I think I want to travel the US East coast for my next family vacation.

Except comparing Disneyland to Disney World is apples to oranges. :)

Great list!

VR - As a kid, mine were visiting relatives or friends or camping. We've tried to do something different.

Maryann - Sometimes I think it's 'the moment' and everything just comes together.

Clarissa - The East Coast is pretty awesome.

Laura - So I understand.

I want to hit Williamsburg, Va with the kiddo some time soon too!

I haven't been to Williamsburg in years. Another good spot!

This makes me pine for a vacation. I'd love the lake and mountains together.
I live 40 miles from Branson... I love it!

Medeia - Lake and mountains equal Lake Tahoe. I'm sure there are others, but Tahoe is breathtakingly beautiful.

Doris - We visited a couple of years ago.

#10 The Beach. #1 The Beach! I'm partial to beaches! :)

Good list, however, because I used to live in Florida (beaches on both coasts) and then in Washington, DC these two destinations cannot be in my vacation list. I've also traveled within the US (which should be a must for every American to get to know their country better). Therefore, I vacation abroad, mostly Europe. ;)I like to learn more about other cultures.

Lisa - I love beaches, too, but also other things. Short attention span - LOL.

Claudia - I agree we should know our own country better.

What's Branson? Is this a place? I could look it up, but I'm just too lazy! :) Happy weekend!
Carol Kilgore said…
Lazy is allowed ... it's the weekend :)

Branson is in southeastern Missouri, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, and I'm not sure how best to describe it. If you're 8 you'll love it. Same if you're 80. In between ... lots of people love it, I'm not as enamored. It's a strange mix of entertainment throughout the entire town. Sort of a patriotic Las Vegas with no gambling and more things for kids.

I like your list! Nice to see what makes the top ten over there. This is what the top ten would be for Brit holidays (no particular order)

1. The Seaside
2. Camping in the country
3. Caravan (if you are of a certain age/disposition)
4. Staying in a B&B (usually at the seaside or the country)
5. Going to London (or another city) to shop and sight-see
5. Going to Europe
6. Going on a Big holiday (further than Europe - and yes, most people say 'big' holiday!)
7. The Lake District
8. Going to Ireland
9. Holiday camp (not so popular nowadays)
10. Holidaying at Home!
Carol Kilgore said…
Your seaside and our beach would be about the same sort of vacation, I think. And you hit camping. Unfortunately for us over here, Ireland and Europe are not as nearby as they are for you. They would be a Big Holiday for us. One of my favorite things is a city vacation with Live-In Handyman discovering all sorts of new things together.

I think I'm going to fill up the gas tank and see how many I can hit in the next month. Except Disney. That mouse is not getting my moolah right now.
I second Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, love the mountains, lakes, and the beach (although I never go in the water anymore). But my favorite all-time vacation place is Epcot Center in Florida. I could spend a week there and be perfectly happy (if I didn't run out of money).
